. ....while looking for the size of the 787 APU (two 225 KVA gens) I came across this:
Assembling the impinges on June 19. Check out the vertical fin in the jig/positioner and apparently the aft pressure bulkheadn in the fuselage section on the left. In the medium res. version, the bulkhead looks like it's in zinc chromate and the skin looks like aluminum!
Anyhow, I'm thinking
1). I don't see any holes in the bulkhead for induction air from the mystery ducts to the tailcone and
B). doesn't the APU exhaust have to be away from ground crew and fuel, i.e. in the tailcone?
BTW, the med res pic shows good human scale.
how/who changed ‘empennage’ to ‘impinges’ ?!??!?
Those aren't mystery ducts. That section with the concave pressure wall will sit in front of the horizontal stabilizer. The aircraft, like most airliners, can adjust the angle of attack of the entire horizontal stabilizer for different flight regimes such as takeoff and landing, to keep a neutral stick when flaps and gear are lowered. Those "mystery ducts" are simply the slots that the tailplane will move up and down in. In the rollout picture, you will notice a very large fairing at the root of each horizontal stabilizer. That covers the slot you see here.
B). doesn't the APU exhaust have to be away from ground crew and fuel, i.e. in the tailcone?
Yes, in most aircraft, the APU exhausts out the tailcone. The 787 is no different.
