Not really. Wrestling is pretty far from PC. Peoples tastes change as the times change. The promotion drives some of that change, and in other cases reacts to it.
Not too long ago, there was an incident where one wrestler, Jake Roberts, put his hand on Randy Savage's wife/manager Elizabeth, intending to put a wrestling move on her. The incident was shocking and memorable - for mainstream wrestling, women weren't attacked very much. This incident turned Roberts into a much bigger bad guy, and it sold tickets because everyone wanted to see Savage beat him up.
These days, women are routinely manhandled by the male wrestlers. The audience is desensitized to it. It doesn't sell tickets. A woman can get power bombed one day and be back on tv (maybe with a neck brace) just a couple of days later.
Not too long ago, if in the storyline a wrestler seduced one wrestler's woman (wife, manager, valet), he would more often than not be the bad guy. These days, stealing another guy's wife or woman is applauded by the audience.
None of this has anything to do with PC.
Of course, not having watched it in years I am only speculating. Do they still have good story lines like that or are they just dumb and vulgar?
I agree, wrestling changed but not because it got PC. I grew up in South Florida in the 1970’s with NWA wrestling and Gordon Solie announcing it. The wrestlers were: Dusty Rhodes, Joe LeDuc, the Brisco Brothers, Pak Son, Mike & Eddie Graham, Maniac Mark Lewin, Professor Tanaka, et al. I ate that stuff up. I even remember midget wrestling!
Back then, there was a good guy and a bad guy with very few in between. Today, there are no real good guys and everyone is pretty dark and evil. There also has been a lot of sex (even porn) and misogyny (I am pretty conservative guy and I rarely throw that term around) injected into wrestling the past 15 years. Oh course, there is a whole lot more money in it and that is why they are constantly pushing the envelope. I did catch a brief snippet of the Vince M. death the other day and I thought that this was a new low by even professional wrestling standards.
Bottom line, pro wrestling is total trailer trash entertainment; however, there is a little bit of trailer trash in all of us.
I started watching wrestling when I was a wee tyke. It started because my grandpa would come over to the house to watch & I wanted to hang with him & my dad.
I stopped watching wrestling in the mid to late ‘70’s.
Over the last ten years I watched every now & again, but could not take much because it became too much like a soap opera. My husband & son like it, so upon occasion I suffer parts of the show.
About a yearish ago there was a match where the winner would “have sex” with some women in the ring. These fools actually pretended to have sex in the middle of the ring. This happened in an arena that was 1/3 children. That was the end for me. BS is OK for wrestling, but almost porno where children are in attendance is way out of line.
