I think this article probably explains why MS is suddenly trying to make deals with Linux vendors. If they take this seriously, then MS is screwed in the corporate data centers. Once those go to (mainly) linux, then the corporate desktop isn’t far behind, for compatibility reasons.

If that were the case then in the 90s we would all have solaris desktops. *If* ms is scared its not about losing the desktop to linux any time soon (Apple is a far greater threat in that layer) its losing server share which has become a very important part of their business..

Her gushing over the GPL is getting on my nerves. I swear for PJ sometimes it’s “There is no God but RMS and the GPL is his divine revelation.”

Well I think the GPL is a great license, though unlike PJ I also like the BSD, PDF, and other OSS licenses. Also unlike PJ more practice people realize there is a good place for close source licenses.

That’s true—for back then. However, since linux desktops have matured in the last decade (even in the last couple of years), Linux on the corporate desktop is much more viable and possible these days.

Also, you gotta remember that Groklaw began as a means to defend the GPL. It the basic reason for her site.

Yeah, but in the 90s they would have had to pay for a license for each and every Solaris desktop.

I thought it began just so she could learn to blog in hopes of blogging about law in general. The first post was about a P2P suit.

Well I think the GPL is a great license

My main problem with it is the lack of clarity of what is and isn't considered a derived work depending on how things are linked, and the FSF won't tell you beforehand if what you're doing is compliant. I prefer the Mozilla Public License.

there is a pretty good understanding over what is derived and what is not..

Hmm. I was under the impression she began Groklaw because of the fiaSCO.

Hmm. I was under the impression she began Groklaw because of the fiaSCO.

The timing of the two is close, so it looks like that. At that time PJ really just commented negatively on the claims to own Linux, but didn't say much about the actual suit. That came later after SCO's antics.

I wasn’t basing my impression on the timing, though. I think (I may be mistaken) that she has made a couple of comments in the past year about starting up Groklaw because of SCO. I don’t have the time right now to go back and research it, though, so if you are certain about it, then I’ll accept yor version. :)

there is a pretty good understanding over what is derived and what is not.

But it's not stated in the license. You have to trust the author not to interpret it in a way that you don't like. The LGPL does better with this.
