As Redcloak asked, “Does anyone know if there was food in the tent?”
Was their signs out in the open warning the cityfolk campers that they were in bear country and to suspend all foodstuffs in the air.
Fighting a bear for that cooler full of food is losing battle. Being stupid is probably the most common reason for bear attacks on people.

I read a book by a guy who chronicled about 20 bear attacks and his conclusions were a bit different--that some bears are just surly, the way some people are just surly, and that most of the attacks were not precipitated by people who do "stupid things." They were precipitated by bears who are willing to kill people--sometimes without even eating them. The stupid thing is to be in the wild and not have the means to protect yourself.
