I’m with you on this one. I have heard from a Japanese engineer I worked with that the bombing saved his life. He was supposed to do a suicide mission if the US attacked.
The pastor of my church was assigned to fly a Sakura jet as well, but the bomb saved his life. He fell into the yazuka, got saved at a tent revival, and now is a professor at a seminary.
MY OPINION about traveling in Japan is: get on the ground, find a foreigner friendly newsletter or grab a local foreigner and find a gaijin ‘foreigner’ house to stay in. You’ll end up spending $30 a night instead of $200 a night in Tokyo. I stayed at one in the middle of Akasaka, Tokyo, for $60 a night and it was great.
