If Doyle Brunson is pokers Babe Ruth, Phil Hellmuth, Jr. just became its Hank Aaron.
Hellmuth surpassed Brunson and fellow poker legend Johnny Chan to become the first player in history to capture 11 coveted World Series of Poker gold bracelets last night at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Hellmuth reached the milestone upon winning a three-day, $1,500 No-Limit Texas Holdem event at the 38th Annual World Series of Poker presented by Milwaukees Best Light.
Brunson and Chan, with 10 bracelets each, were on hand Monday night to present Hellmuth with the record 11th bracelet.
"This is the one I really wanted," Hellmuth said in a post-tournament press conference. "I have so much respect for Doyle and Johnny. To now be at the top of the all-time (WSOP wins) list is really about as good a feeling as I have ever had."
"Poker players everywhere measure themselves against each other by how many WSOP bracelets they have," said World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. "Now, all WSOP bracelet holders must measure themselves against Phil Hellmuth. He is a true sports champion and we are proud that he is part of the WSOP family."
The record-setting victory marked the largest number of opponents Hellmuth has ever defeated in a tournament. When Hellmuth won the final hand Monday at 7:55 p.m. PDT, he had bested a field of 2,628 participants.
Each of Hellmuths 11 bracelets came from victories in No-Limit Texas Holdem events. His most celebrated victory prior to Monday night was his first at the 1989 World Series of Poker $10,000 No-Limit Texas Holdem Championship, commonly referred to as the Main Event.
Hellmuth won three bracelets in a single year 1993 and won his 10th WSOP title last year, after trailing rivals Brunson and Chan for more than two years.
With a total of 55 events on this years WSOP schedule, Brunson and Chan have ample opportunity to retake a share of the record. Both men plan to play several more tournaments this year, including the Main Event.
Luxury Swiss watchmaker Corum designed and manufactured all 55 bracelets being awarded at the 38th Annual World Series of Poker presented by Milwaukees Best Light.

Away from he table perhaps.
In any case he needs a new image consultant if that's his chosen "public persona".
I change the channel whenever I see him.
And on the flip side to your flip side is that:
Half of Hellmuth's 12 bracelets are prior to 2000, and only one is for the Main Event.
Eight of Brunson's are prior to 2000, and 2 are for the Main Event.
Aside from that the comparison isn't possible, since Brunson and Hellmuth have played in totally different WSOP tourneys over the years. It's not as if they've been playing heads-up for 20 years.
I still enjoy watching the allstar invitational event when Annie Duke got into Phil’s head and he self-destructed.
Can you imagine Jamie Gold running his big-mouthed BS against Stu Unger? I think Unger would have tortured him just for the fun of it.
Phil’s head is gonna blow one day. Gifted and the consummate brat. What a combo.
or screwed him up pretty bad depending on how you want to look at it. LOL
I loss $50 bucks last night.
Yep, looking good Bobby (deporation from Japan, 2004).
Did he hug and cry on Mommy's shoulder this time?
I understand Ungar used to get under Hellmuth's skin quite a bit.
For those who want to see it, the final hand is here:

And here is an impression of Phil playing online. Hilarious:

Predictable, huh?
I was poking through the WSOP records this morning, to see if they'd had any direct matchups at the same tables, but nothing obvious turned up. Surely they must have run into each other pretty regularly in LV.
There are only two guys I really dislike watching, Gold and Hellmuth. It would have been a beautiful thing to see Ungar rip either one of them to shreds. I would guess from what I've read and the little I've seen that he did a lot more than get under Hellmuth's skin.
And he was going for 3 in a row when he finished 2nd to Helmuth.
We get to see a mere fraction of the play. A couple years ago the final table lasted just over 20 hours. It was shown on TV in a 2 hour program that in reality had less than an hour of poker.
