There were some fond memories of the steaks and tabuli at Jamil’s in the early 70s but I stopped there in the late 90s and was disappointed. Was it me, or did it really go downhill?
We can’t forget Garth Brooks either.
It was sad the way things went for him.
We were all talking about him the other night.
I really didn't know him well but enjoyed talking with him on occasion.
Once pressed to answer who was the most famous female he had ever "known", he somewhat sheepishly responded with "Janis Joplin".
I didn’t eat there on a regular basis, so I don’t know. Whenever I did, it was good.
The big question I always have to ask is whether you ate at Ike’s!
Well, I met him in OKC, when I was living there, so I think of him from “that side” of the state, lol. You know, the part without any trees.
A couple of years ago, he recieved a Christmas Card from Garth with a gift certificate to Myers-Durhon Harley Davidson for any bike of his choice.
Garth is one of the boys in this great town.
What did happen to him? I literally never laid eyes on him again except a few times at a distance, from at least 1977 onward and probably long before that.
(Saw where your friend Dennis and his current wife are going to have twins through a surrogate - a boy and a girl.)
I am not familiar with Ike’s. Was it there before 1973? That is when I left Tulsa. In those days of our youth we thought the Steak and Ale with the menus printed on meat cleavers was the “cats meow.”
Garth was born in Tulsa. I don’t know how old he was before moving elsewhere.
The band he was with when I was doing PR for Marlboro and he was in a national contest we were running was from Stillwater, I *thought.*
Ike’s Chili Parlor had been downtown since God was a little baby - not really sure how long. I think it was bgb (wasn’t it?) who told me they had closed in recent years.
They made a really dark chocolate-brown Cincinnati-style chili that I really liked. Served it the famous “three-way” with spaghetti. I don’t usually tell my Texas friends or fellow chili cooks that I liked it.
BTW, *where* is the time capsule burial site? I still haven’t seen any of the stories!
Another coincidence. I, too, did PR for some well known clients.
She said they must be too busy to take time out for a pregnancy. I'm glad I never "made it" in Holywood.
About Gordon...died a near recluse and penniless at his house in Brookside. They bulldozed the property recently.
Sorry to pass this info along. Prayers for the repose of his soul.
Just go to the top of the thread and click on the red "Tulsa World" beneath the headline. It'll take you to several stories, pictures and videos about the car.
I started to say I had more fun doing it in OK than here, but that’s not really true. Just that the whole state was the same market size as my city now.
I don’t work anymore, anyway. Wish I could, but I’m too sick with a chronic breathing problem.
Oh, I’m sorry to hear that - thanks for telling me. I didn’t know anything about him until I looked it up a while ago. It does sound sad, but I also know how easily it can happen. RIP, Gordie.
Thanks - I hadn’t done that because I thought that was the link that didn’t work! Sorry.
“Wish I could, but Im too sick with a chronic breathing problem.”
I’m sorry to hear that. I hope it wasn’t brought on by your clients products.
Nope, never used theirs. Combination of severe outdoor mold spore allergy, developed from years of mowing my yard without a filter mask, and Houston’s pollution and high humidity, plus a stressful situation that knocked my immune system for a loop. Thanks!
Whatever the cause, I’m sorry that it slowed you down. I’ll be 70 in another six months, and while not in the peak of health, I seem to have a bit of steam left. Certainly, I have some awesome memories.
Big day BUMP. Hope you dig the occasion down at the courthouse today. Would love to read your account of the festivities in the near future, and thanks for posting about this fascinating subject.
