Best TV for $2,000?
June 10, 2007 | MississippiMasterpiece

I've been setting aside money for a new HDTV and have about $2,000 to spend. Would appreciate any recommendations from Freepers that have made recent purchases. Obviously, I'd like the biggest screen for my buck, but am most interested in picture clarity.

Thanks so much :).

I have looked at AAFES. I know that the shipping is free, but honestly, these days it seems that they charge so much for product that it all comes out in the wash. I really do much better at Sam’s or WalMart, or somewhere like that.

Does LG really make good product? The only reason I ask is because my last cell phone was an LG, and I had nothing but trouble with it. We had three (we have three cell lines), and all three of them were crap. I had kind of gotten nervous about trying anything else by them. My grandmother has one of their washers and loves it though. I will have to look into it.

The trouble with AAFES is that they have only top quality items, not like Walmarts stuff. I agree with you that it is kinda expensive. I don’t Need , nor can I afford White Stag sweaters at $100 a pop. But AAFES has them.

As for LG, if you have had a bad experience with them, please steer clear of them. I only have a couple of LG items and they are working ok.

I did see a couple of samsung tvs on the AAFES web site, however.

Don't us them myself. Couldn't tell you.

Send me the $2,000 and kill your TV.

You'll be better off in the long run.

Last month I bought a Sony Grand WEGA™ 50” LCD Projection HDTV (KDF-50E2000). Paid $1199.00 at Circuit City. Great picture, really like it. This set is not a true flat panel, and you need to use a stand, but I am very impressed with the quality so far.

The only cons are the 10 second delay from powering on the TV to seeing the picture (the bulb must warm up first), and the bulb will need replacing every 4 or 5 years.

One big reason I chose a 50 in. LCD projection over a plasma is power consumption. Looked at a 50 in. plasma from Vizio, but it uses 500 watts of power continuous. The 50 in. LCD I got uses 200 watts.

I am shopping in the $2,000 range, too, but am thinking of moving up to $2,800 for the new Samsung LN-T4665F based on reviews I'm reading.

There are a lot of 50” plasma sets that will knock your socks off for under $2000. Set aside a few hundred for a ‘home theater in a box’ audio system and cables.

Go to the stores and see what you like.

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT BUY THE MONSTER CABLES OR ANY OTHER EXPENSIVE WIRING FOR HOOKUP.

There are plenty of sources on the net to get cables at a tenth of the cost.

Bob,

Thanks so much for the advice....sound too!

I'm in process of selling off a few items that when sold should give me the freedome to purchase one of these things.

Question: is it "too early" to buy? Should one wait until the technology goes through the next improvement and the fall brings the Christmas buying season bargains?

The choice is clear: a Sony Bravia LCD TV. I have the 40" set and I'm very happy with mine. For $2,0000 you can't go wrong with Sony. Its simply value for your HDTV dollars.

I'll second that - just got the 52" model. Go to AV Science Forum for in-depth discussions of all of the various HDTV models and their strengths and weaknesses.

You are asking a guy who bought a beta Max, thinking the VCR format would never be a big seller. The guy that paid $1,000 for a directv receiver a year before they started to give the equipment away free with a service contract.

The only thing I can say is that you pay your money and take your chances.

You know analog TV is going out, and HDTV is becoming the standard, so to go with digital and HD seems to me to be a nobrainer. I have not seen TI’s DLP demoed yet, but I’d bet it aint cheap.

Bob,

Thanks again for the good advice! I'm gonna get my stuff sold, but I'm going to begin my research now. Might as well get over "sticker shock" as soon as I can.

Thanks again!

Jim
