How Can Libby/Schiavo be Connected?

Posted on 06/08/2007 6:23:09 PM PDT by ukwildcats

I have no clue how to cut and paste this, maybe someone could help me out? irontontribune.com is the small town newspaper that this guy writes for.

The title of his opinion piece is "Justice not served if Libby Pardoned".

Just wanting to share that even in small town America the liberal infection sets in.

Go Big Blue!

Justice not served if Libby is pardoned

The Internet is all aflutter with the right wing of American politics demanding the pardoning of Scooter Libby, evidencing the same kind of passion and veal that surrounded the Terri Schiavo case.

In fact, advocates for the pardon are many of the same people who championed the Schiavo case and intervention in our legal system then.

There seems to be a consistency here, that is, the conservatives in America are tough law and order folks unless that conflicts with their friends and causes, and then they oppose the legal system and all of its processes.

Consider the case of Terri Schiavo. You may recall Sen. Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) providing a diagnosis on the Senate floor without seeing the patient other than on a video.
*

You may recall the Republicans in Congress rushing to overrule the courts in Florida who had made it abundantly clear that the rule of law had been followed in the case. You might recall Jeb Bush and his brother speaking out in the case.

Yet, in the end, the law prevailed. That was good for our families and good for the nation.

Now comes one Scooter Libby, convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice. Not convicted by the way by Democrats, but by a prosecutor assigned by a Republican Attorney General, one who has successfully prosecuted both Democrats and Republicans in his career as a federal prosecutor. And not convicted by a judge, but by a jury of 12, who heard the evidence in the case and found Mr. Libby had broken the law.

Mr. Libby, it should be said, was not convicted of forgetting; he was convicted of lying and making further investigation impossible because of those lies.

In his defense, supporters argue that there was no underlying crime; no one was charged with outing a covert CIA agent.

Lacking such a crime, they argue, Libby did not do wrong in lying to the special prosecutor and the grand jury. Here again there is consistency with Republican justice. In the precedent case of Bill Clinton there was no underlying case. The case was built upon lying in the Paula Jones investigation, but that was resolved out of court, leaving no underlying claim.

Yet the very same people who thought that should result in impeachment and conviction see no crime in the Libby case. Once again, these Republican conservatives see the law only as useful as it serves their agenda.

As to the pardon itself, the general rule of presidential pardons has been candidates for pardon must have served prison time, completed their sentence and shown remorse for their acts.

Although the Justice Department does not make the decision on presidential pardons, it has suggested that these principals guide presidential decisions, with the additional guideline of a pardon occurring after five years since prison release.

Libby was convicted of perjury.

I have no clue as to how this relates to Schiavo.

But, I do see how it could relate to Valerie Plame and her selective memory while under oath.

Richard Nixon served time?

How about Marc Rich?

The author doesn’t know what he’s talking about. As usual.

Neither do I, nor did I think the "save person with no brain crowd" were a bunch of right wingers. Rather, I thought they were from the "aliens from outer space are here, and the government has secret mind control weapons" (which Terri would have been immune from) crowd, which usually consists of left wing lunatics.

I think the author of this piece is somewhat confused as to who belongs in the blue and red squares.

I just do not see any relation to Schiavo.

But, he may open a pandoras’ box by mentioning it.

Plame and Wilson testified under oath.

Gee, I thought it had something to do with Slick Willy saying "he did not have sex with that woman", the woman being someone other than Pala Jones, who he also had sex with. Bubba also masterbated in the WH bathroom sink, but he wasn't impeached for that either. He may have been had he lied about it to the grand jury. Seems this "author" (title undeserving) can't seem to grasp the fact even after all these years, that Clinton was impeached for LYING, not for having sex with his intern, which is ok for RATS in the whitehouse, but when it comes to gays in the house, it's NOT ok to talk dirty to willing, legal aged interns. (unless you were a gay Democrat, then it's ok).

How about this:

“Social conservatives got their asses handed to them over the Schiavo case and had their faces rubbed in it with the Libby verdict”

Is that the kind of connection you had in mind?

What's that, veal braised in a passion fruit juices? Thanks but no, thanks. I'd rather have a cheeseburger.

Such is the election analysis by the DNC, MoveOn, leftist media and, interestingly enough, Al Jazeera. It suits their political purposes to say so. It is harder to make a serious case that the Schiavo case changed any votes. Democrats by and large presented themselves as opposed to corruption and more conservative. They had a point.
