Howya, ZC? We all agree around here that opposition to illegal immigration isn’t racist.

It's a little more complicated than that. There is the perfectly legitimate concern for American national identity not disappearing or being swallowed up by Mexican national identity. Certainly the USA has every bit as much right to an ethno-cultural identity as Australia.

Then there is the fact that much of the current wave of illegal immigration is a literal attempt to reconquer land Mexico "lost" (ie, which it inherited from Spain win it won its independence from that country but which it really never did anything with). This is most certainly a concern.

But all this is complicated by the fact that there are other people out there to whom ethnic/racial identity is the be-all and end-all of everything (mostly atheist evolutionists) and who believe all the peoples of the world are basically unconnected and unrelated to each other, and that each should create its own "valid" worldview. This is outright paganism.

And on top of all that is the fact that, as a Catholic country, it is not really a given that Mexico is outside "western civilization" to begin with. Catholicism is a universal religion, after all, and theologically it doesn't really recognize the existence of different national groups (despite the Buchanans and Sobrans, who place loyalty to "European man" ahead of loyalty to their religion). During the Middle Ages the nation state as we know it today did not exist. So it's a perfectly legitimate problem whether one's primary loyalty lies with one's countrymen or one's co-religionists (in the ancient world, when each nation had it's own "gxd," this question did not exist; this is basically the world the "palaeoconservatives" want to resurrect). If both the USA and Mexico were Catholic both governments could ask the Pope to mediate any controversy, but religious identity has been so severed from national identity in the modern world that this isn't going to happen.

It's a knotty problem!
