Westview Middle Schools Teacher of the Year, Kanesa Hopkins, went from being in front of a 7th grade class to behind bars. The 31-year-old teacher is accused of criminal sexual misconduct with a former student.
She's been placed on administrative leave at this point with pay, Berkeley County School District Representative, Pam Bailey, said.
Hopkins is accused of sexual misconduct with a then-14-year-old female student. According to court documents, the girl was a 7th grade student at Westview Middle three years ago. Investigators said the student and teacher started writing letters to each other in 2001 and became close. Hopkins was also the girl's Sunday School teacher and police said church officials questioned the amount of time the two spent together in December of 2002. Detectives said in January of 2003 the relationship became sexual.
Westview Middle parents said they are shocked at the accusations. They want to know all the facts before they make up their minds. One mother said she is considering taking her son out of the school and placing him in a private school.
The school community is very concerned, the administration met with the faculty today and their concerns is for the students, Bailey said.
Administrators said they first heard about any accusations Monday, when Hopkins was arrested at the school. Their main concern is for students and parents.
Bailey said there are no current students alleging sexual misconduct.
Hopkins taught at Westview Middle School for the past eight years and school officials said they are working closely with police.

She is having sex with an underaged girl and the school district puts her on administrative leave
with pay.
I'd be headed to the school board with a torch and pitchfork, and I wouldn't be alone.

No, she’s innocent until proven guilty. If the school cut her pay now, she could sue the district and I don’t think the tax payers would want that. Better to keep her on the books until the verdict.

GOOSE CREEK The Berkeley County School Board fired Westview Middle School's Teacher of the Year on Tuesday night after her arrest on charges that she had a sexual relationship with an underage student.
The decision by the school board to terminate Kanesa Hopkins came after an executive session meeting on Tuesday.
Hopkins is charged with one count of criminal sexual conduct with a minor in North Charleston and with two counts each of committing a lewd act upon a child under 16 and second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor in Goose Creek.
She is accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a girl between January 2003 and October 2004 when the minor was between 14 and 15, according to investigators' affidavits.
The 31-year-old was selected by her peers as Westview Middle School's 2007 Teacher of the Year. Hopkins was also the girl's Sunday school teacher, the affidavits said.
If convicted, Hopkins faces up to 15 years in prison on the charges of
committing a lewd act upon a child. The two charges of criminal sexual conduct with a minor carry a maximum punishment of 20 years.
A 2004 report by Charol Shakeshaft, a Hofstra University professor, found that more than 4.5 million students experience sexual misconduct by employees at their schools, from inappropriate jokes to forced sex.
Teachers were the most common perpetrators, with women accounting for 43 percent of the offenders, her report said.
Diane Knich and Jamie McGee contributed to this report.

This sounds premature to me.
They had better have had their lawyers go through the union contract with a fine toothed comb before doing this.
She has been charged not convicted.
This is probably just the school board trying to look like they are doing something. (Oh my! The voters are angry! They are calling my house at dinner time!)
Who cares if it cost the school district hundreds of thousands of dollars when the teachers union sues and wins?

Innocent or guilty, the school board would have to comply with the union contract. And when have union members considered being in jail as grounds for termination?
