LAW OF THE LAND

Bush grants presidency extraordinary powers.

Directive for emergencies apparently gives authority without congressional oversight.

President Bush has signed a directive granting extraordinary powers to the office of the president in the event of a declared national emergency, apparently without congressional approval or oversight.

The "National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive" was signed May 9th, notes Jerome R. Corsi in a WND column.

It was issued with the dual designation of NSPD-51, as a National Security Presidential Directive, and HSPD-20, as a Homeland Security Presidential Directive.

The directive establishes under the office of the president a new national continuity coordinator whose job is to make plans for "National Essential Functions" of all federal, state, local, territorial and tribal governments, as well as private sector organizations to continue functioning under the president's directives in the event of a national emergency.

If that’s been pulled before, possibly someone mistook it for one of Gary Larson’s cartoons, which we have to pull because of a copyright complaint. There’s nothing remotely objectionable about the cartoon itself.

Gosh, I didn't mean you moderators. I work for Homeland Security, and I was referring to them as a sometimes humorless bunch.

They don't like us making fun of our color coding.

This is two weeks old, though, and there has been no increase in the color coded warning systems, I doubt this is anything special, else, he would be chastised by the Dems for NOT upping the color coded warning system

Joe, things are series, when the government issues a three
syllable warning.

I almost went with the gild thing my self but decided
my lily would be overdoing it.

Next I tried a guild but the shop steward thing put me off,
so now I have some steel girders girdling my loins but it IS difficult to walk.

Let me know how that dragon scale stuff works, last time I girded my loins with a lizard I got the oddest sensation of wanting to molt.

Waiting for Round #2.

You’re funny. I started changing my mind after reading some other quotes. Then I remembered the tornado in Greensburg and saw that he issued this directive the day he visited the town, so calmed down and determined this is preparation for the hurricane season.

Actually, I thought your post #9 was logical and made the most sense, but there is absolutely no reason for people to be freaking out about this directive or that directive being signed, because if the day should dawn that America is facing the kind of national emergency that would require the establishment of martial law, suspension of the Constitution, etc., the last thing we'll be needing to worry about is what sort of presidential directives got signed on such and such a date.

If the emergency is legitimate (example: terrorist nuke(s) in one or more U.S. cities), the public is probably going to be demanding such measures to try and keep order.

If it is merely a power grab by the Feds to institute the long-suspected police state waiting in the wings, there will be civil war from coast to coast because when the orders come down to confiscate all privately owned firearms, you can bet there will be a huge collective and thunderous F--KKKKKK YOUUUUUU!!! from any and all true patriots. And it would not surprise me if more than a few military units chose to take their Oath to 'preserve, protect and defend' the Constitution more seriously than any perceived and expected obedience to any superior authority issuing orders which are contrary to the Constitution.

And I suspect there would be no Internet worth connecting to (if you could), all media would be firmly under the control of the USIA, and the only means for patriots to communicate would be via short wave radio. Cellphones with their GPS-potential would be untrustworthy. Ditto for newer vehicles (assuming they have not been universally shut down via hidden transponder controls that we don't even know are there).

Oh, it would be more than a parade, it would be a freakin' pageant.

This is a non-story.

A new high level coordinator to take on the job of tying together disparate organizations at the local, State, and Federal levels in the event of a national emergency is not the creation of a dictator. No new powers are enumerated here, merely a new way of delegating those powers.

"I wouldn't assume that Congress will be much more than a thin glowing vapor after the next attack."

That's a problem of their own creation. Not a problem for me. Since it's imaginary.

Radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr returned to Iraq after reportedly spending months in Iran following the "surge" of U.S. troops in Baghdad.

Report today from another source.
