Man dies in attempt to kill girlfriend

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man trying to kill his girlfriend by stopping a car in front of an approaching train was himself killed Monday when the train hit the vehicle and launched it into him as he tried to flee, police said.

The girlfriend survived.

The man drove the car in front of a group of other vehicles stopped at a railroad crossing in the San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Sunland, Officer Mike Lopez said.

The driver, who was seen arguing with his girlfriend, parked the car on the tracks and jumped out, leaving her behind, Lopez said.

A northbound commuter train hit the rear of the car, hurling it into the man. The girlfriend was taken to the hospital, where she was in stable condition, Lopez said.

“She gets hit by a train and lives. He gets hit by his own car and he dies,” Lopez said.

The train was heading from downtown to Lancaster in northern Los Angeles County at the time of the 12:08 p.m. crash, said Denise Tyrrell, a spokeswoman for Metrolink.

There were no injuries on the train, which carried 132 passengers and crew members, Tyrrell said. The train had superficial damage.

The train’s speed wasn’t immediately known. The limit in the area is 79 mph, Tyrrell said. At that speed, it would take one-third of a mile to stop, she said.

It is highly unusual for someone to survive being struck by a train, Tyrrell said. “The train to your car is like your car to a soda pop can. It’s just not going to be a fair fight,” Tyrrell said.

INSTANT KARMA
(John Lennon)

Instant Karma’s gonna get you
Gonna knock you right on the head
You better get yourself together
Pretty soon you’re gonna be dead
What in the world you thinking of
Laughing in the face of love
What on earth you tryin’ to do
It’s up to you, yeah you

Instant Karma’s gonna get you
Gonna look you right in the face
Better get yourself together darlin’
Join the human race
How in the world you gonna see
Laughin’ at fools like me
Who in the hell d’you think you are
A super star
Well, right you are

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Ev’ryone come on

Instant Karma’s gonna get you
Gonna knock you off your feet
Better recognize your brothers
Ev’ryone you meet
Why in the world are we here
Surely not to live in pain and fear
Why on earth are you there
When you’re ev’rywhere
Come and get your share

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
Come on and on and on on on
Yeah yeah, alright, uh huh, ah

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
On and on and on on and on

Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Yeah we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun

Onlookers kept telling the guy that the woman in the car was not Nancy Peloser but drunken mumbling Murdering Ted Kennedy said train tracks would have to do since he could not find a bridge to drive off.

Nah ...this guy is not a Darwin Awards recipient. What he did was criminal, but it was not necessarily plain ol'tired DUMB! Most winners (or even qualifiers) for the Darwin Awards have to either die or have their reproductive functions negated due to outright stupidity. E.g. the thief whose gun jammed during a robbery, and he decided to peep inside the barrel to see what the problem was - while pulling the trigger (at which point the gun decided to work). That is a Darwin Award's event.

This guy just suffered from sheer bad luck. That car could have landed anywhere, his girlfriend was in the car (thus that part of his plan worked), and he was running away. Fate just saw things different and decided to snuff the perp out.

Did he deserve it? Yes! He is a perp who tried to kill his girlfriend. However, his death shouldn't technically be filed under Darwin. A more appropos cause for his death would be Murphy's Law.

$h!t just decided to happen to him that day, and it sure took him out!

Another a-hole who thinks his girlfriend is a possesion and tries to kill her like a baby breaking his toys. “If I can`t have you nobody will, you are mine mine mine! WAAAH! A-WAAAH!” I can`t stand punks like this, bet you he hit her as well in the past. The Muzzies would be proud.

Was too so! If your car is ever stalled on the railroad tracks and you see an approaching train, walk away from the car towards the oncoming train. All the collision debris is going to be going the same way as the train.

She had a fair fighting chance of survival if the train struck the driver's side, she might only be pushed along with the car and benefit from whatever protection it afforded. The initial jolt would cause injuries, but she did manage to survive, in "fair" condition. Her boyfriend, otoh, forgot his protection, for the last time, thank God.

I do wonder sometimes, though, what it would take for some women to leave the jerk that they're with. Talk about a trainwreck of a relationship.

If you ever get an answer for that question please get back to me. Because I really really really wonder what makes some people stay with folk that are just plain wrong for them. For instance, I am certain this guy did not just suddenly get the urge to kill her. He must have been treating her badly for quite some time before the attempted murder.

I am always puzzled by people who stay in situations that are not only unhealthy (be it unhealthy in a mental, spiritual, phsyical etc manner), but also life-threatening at times (or if not outrightly life-threatening then dangerous or damaging, e.g. someone who likes to 'touch' children). I just simply do not comprehend why otherwise logical people would stay with such a person.
