The Mannlicher-Carcano was such a fine weapon that, at the time, it could be purchased in a Burlington, VT Woolworth’s for under $20.

I remember department stores that used to sell good surplus rifles at very fair prices. But with all of the gun control laws that have been passed, I think most of them have given up the trade. (For that matter, I think most of them have given up all trade, having gone out of business long ago.)

Actually, I seem to remember that the price on the M-C was under $10, but this was 40+yrs. ago and my memory ain’t what it used to be. I used the $20 figure to CMA in the cause of accuracy. I do, however, remember that the rifles were placed butt down in a wire mesh cylinder on the floor,(like the ones they use for kid’s plastic balls) at the end of the toy counter.
