Stealing Compasses Doesn't Save This Pirate

At the end of the first Pirates' Court, tensions are high between scientist and Chippendale dancer John and the ship's Captain, Joe Don. John thinks he has the upper hand when he claims he has stolen the ship's only navigational aids and threatens to take them with him unless the crew votes for mutiny. This move only further angers his fellow crewmembers. The crew casts their ballots and the vote is unanimous: John is the first pirate to be cut adrift.

As he floats out to sea, John gives his final words: "Nobody really cared about the compasses. That may or may not be a mistake. You know, it was my last ditch effort. I thought it was a pretty strong move, but it really didn't end up swaying anybody. I can't really be bitter about that. You know, I like to play big and play hard and, you know, just going for it all."

I Want Me Some of That!

A single longboat cuts through the foggy Caribbean night, heading towards a towering pirate ship, the Picton Castle. The longboat contains 16 ordinary Americans, who have left their lives behind in order to live as Pirates and search for buried treasure.

Once everyone boards the ship, they are greeted by Cameron Daddo, who informs them that this will be their new home; but it won't be a pleasure cruise. The new Pirates get to work right away as they hoist an ancient chest out of the water. Upon seeing the chest and assuming there is treasure inside, Louie, the fishing dock operator, exclaims, "I want me some of that!"

The Chest of Zanzibar

The crew learns that they have just pulled up the Chest of Zanzibar, which once belonged to a pirate known as Captain Henry Steel. Legend has it that in 1726 Captain Steel divided his fortune into 14 treasures: one for him and one for each of his 13 crewmen. They buried the treasure and made two maps for each location. These maps are currently locked in separate compartments inside the Chest of Zanzibar and together, they all lead to treasure worth one million dollars. Ben, a musician and recent college graduate, can barely contain his excitement. "This is the best opportunity I've ever had," he explains. "I'm on a pirate ship. The wind's blowing in my face. There's no place I'd rather be right now than right here."

First Impressions

The excitement continues through the night as the Pirates enjoy some rum and get to know each other on the ship's deck. Louie is impressed when he meets his fellow shipmate, Christian, a former NFL Running Back from the Kansas City Chiefs. Another Pirate, Deputy District Attorney Cheryl, gives off an intimidating first impression to her fellow female crewmembers and John, a scientist/exotic dancer, quickly gets under the skin of Joy, a receptionist, who warns John, "Make sure you sleep far, far on the other side." John continues to annoy Joy and the rest of the crew with his hushed voice, intense demeanor, and his constant invasion of personal space.

At dawn, the crew sets sail for the island of Dominica, where they will open the first compartment of the chest. However, the choppy waters don't sit well with Joy. She is the first Pirate in the crew to experience sea sickness and her fellow crewmembers watch as she vomits over the side of the ship.

The Crocodile's Lair

The ship drops anchor just off the shore of Dominica. Cameron unlocks the first compartment on the Chest of Zanzibar and pulls out two maps and two compasses. It is now time for the crew to split into two teams. Picking shot from bags, the pirates split into a Red Crew and a Black Crew. The first crew to use their map and their compass to discover the treasure will get to keep all the gold to themselves.

For their first Expedition, the Pirates must paddle up the mouth of the Indian River and make a left at a fork to find Dead Man's Tree. Then heading east on foot, they'll have to find three buried keys that will unlock and lower a skeleton's cage that holds their next map.

As the Expedition begins, the Red Crew immediately runs into trouble when they don't use their boat rudder properly and find themselves off course. The Black Crew uses this opportunity to forge ahead. Once the Black Crew reaches land though, Ben faces a setback when he gets stuck in mud and can't find his shoe. As he and some of his fellow crewmembers search through the mud, the Red Crew starts to catch up. Eventually, Ben recovers his shoe and the Expedition continues. The Black Crew unearths the three buried keys, but they have trouble using them to pry open the lock on the skeleton's cage. Luckily, John, the black sheep of the Black Crew, figures out how the keys work, unlocks the cage and retrieves the next map.

The next map leads the Black Crew farther down the Indian River, where they encounter a sabotage point that allows the leading crew to put up a net across the river in order to slow the other crew. Once they trigger the sabotage net, the Black Crew continues on to Crocodile's Lair, the location of the sunken treasure, which is attached to two crocs' heads.

At Crocodile's Lair, the Black Crew jumps into the water, frantically swimming around, trying to find the buried treasure. While everyone searches blindly through the water, the Red Crew starts to maneuver around the sabotage point and catches up to them. Fearing that the Red Crew could find the treasure first, Joe Don, a former naval officer, uses his military background to establish a more organized search plan. However, it's John that comes to the rescue again when he uses his general knowledge about crocodiles and the trees they live under to determine where the treasure must be buried. He dives under the water and resurfaces with the treasure in his hands. The Black Crew wins! As everyone celebrates, John expresses his disappointment in the Black Crew, "I really expected a lot out of the people I was crewing with and somehow I found myself far and above, the only one who was able to do it."

Captain Joe Don Takes Charge

Back on the ship, the Black Crew excitedly counts the gold coins, which amounts to $40,000. Cameron then informs the Black Crew that they must pick a Captain from their group. Almost all the hands go up in favor of Joe Don, who displayed solid leadership abilities on the Expedition. John is the only one who takes issue with Joe Don being elected as Captain, since John feels like he single-handedly brought his crew to a win. With the majority vote, Joe Don becomes Captain and is then given the news that he has received half the treasure--$20,000--and must elect two Officers. He chooses Cheryl and Ben, who each receive $5,000, while the rest of the crew is sent down below with only $2,000 each. When the rest of the Black Crew is sent below deck, John further aggravates his fellow crewmembers by and taking credit for their win and bemoaning the election of Joe Don to Captain.

Later, the crew feels the winds of change when Joe Don lays down the law on the ship and shuts the whole ship out of his luxurious new quarters, the Captain's Cabin. Many of the crewmembers start to notice Joe Don displaying a large degree of arrogance after his promotion to Captain. Alarmed by Joe Don's transformation, Louie establishes that "Any day of the week, I'd rather stand with the crew than the Captain. If he thinks he's gonna get 50 percent of the treasure every time we go on a treasure hunt, he's got another thing coming."

The next day, Joe Don learns, as Captain, that he must mark three Pirates with the Black Spot. Those three will be forced to defend themselves at Pirates' Court, where one will be cut adrift. Joe Don, however, also receives warning to choose wisely because the crew could mutiny and send him adrift. Joe Don meets with his Officers and he informs them that he wants John off the ship since he has bothered the crew since day one. Together, Joe Don and Ben choose Louie, as well, since Ben overheard Louie talking about Mutiny, which is their greatest threat. By making Louie a target, he will be unable to vote, thus hindering the possibility of a Mutiny. The third Pirate to receive the Black Spot will be Joy.

A Bold Move

The Officers inform the rest of the crew about Pirates' Court and they distribute letters to each crewmember. John, Louie, and Joy find Black Spots on their letters. The possibility of being cut adrift angers Louie, brings Joy to tears, and leads John to develop an underhanded strategy to save his skin: he steals both compasses. Now that he has the compasses, John believes it makes sense for his fellow Pirates to keep him in the game because he now has control over navigation. He feels Mutiny is the only option and he hopes to see Joe Don cut adrift.

At Pirates' Court, Louie, John, and Joy have an opportunity to defend themselves. Joy and Louie use their likeable nature and appeal to the friends they've made so far in order to secure their safety. John takes a different approach and reveals the stolen compasses. He informs the crew that they are the only navigational aids and if he goes, they go with him. John urges the crew to vote for a Mutiny so they can send their Captain, who has just pocketed $20,000, out to sea. Joe Don tries to reassure his team that they can continue their voyage without the aid of a compass, but his inability to use the stars to ascertain which direction is north doesn't seem to put the crew at ease. The crewmembers take their ballots and place them upon the dagger. Once the ballots are counted, the vote is unanimous: John's voyage has ended and the Captain cuts John adrift.

With one Pirate gone, who will become the Pirate Master?
