A plane crash has killed five members of a group of skydivers in northwestern Montana in the United States.
The Federal Aviation Administration in Seattle said the plane went down shortly after takeoff, then burned.
The pilot of the Cessna 182 operated by Skydive Lost Prairie was carrying two skydiving instructors and two trainees to jumps, said Michael Morrill, a manager of the company.
Morrill said the plane took off in clear weather.
Names of those killed were not released immediately. All were from Montana, Morrill said.
Skydiving is a relatively small sport in the state, with perhaps 60 or 70 people who are experienced jumpers, said Tina Sanders of Skydive Montana, another business that offers jumps.
She said the aficionados are a close-knit group and another skydiver called her about 15 minutes after the crash happened.
Much of the recreational skydiving in Montana involves tandem skydiving in which novices are attached to experienced jumpers, who control the parachute that carries both people to the ground, Sanders said.
Breaking news? Why?
Perhaps because the Cessna C182 Skylane is a 4 seater, it was somewhat over gross weight, and not able to do a decent takeoff climb.
With fuel that plane was probably very close to max take off weight.
Well, the story is dated tomorrow (May 13). So it’s actually pre-breaking news. :O)
But seriously, it’s hard to determine what’s breaking sometimes. For instance, remember the thread a few weeks back, when a plane went down at an air show? One person died in that and it was considered breaking news.
It’s hard to tell, I think.
Yeah. I’ve seen some stuff that I thought was breaking but removed. Shrug. Too bad they weren’t high enough to get out.
Too bad they didn’t have parachutes on. /sarc
I know they were on take off climb and to low to the ground to deploy. But the irony is still there.
R.I.P. cords.
He (Morrill, manager of the company) said the pilot began working for Sky Dive Lost Prairie about 10 days ago and was experienced, with more than 500 hours of flying time. He had a commercial rating, Morrill said.
The skydivers were heading off to tandem jumps in which trainees are attached to instructors, who control the parachute that carries both people to the ground, Morrill said. The parachutists were to fly for about 30 minutes, free fall for 30 seconds or so and then have a 5-minute “canopy ride” to the ground, Morrill said.
Why not?

Guess there is a self appointed sidebar cop on board
While it is certainly a major tragedy for the families and friends of the victims, can you really contend that it meets the definition of Breaking News?
“Breaking News
- Not every story is breaking news. Breaking news should be news that affects most of us.”

And since I didn’t hit the abuse button, apparently I wasn’t the only one that questioned the topic, since it has now moved to local news.
You really need to get a life
Well, unlike you, I’ll ping someone when I’m talking about them, rather than run around and make snide comments behind their back. Of course, I’m not a coward.
LOL! Loser.
There are stories on breaking news that are assinine. This is about people who died. I think their lives are important enough to be breaking news. After all, how many stories about celebrities and politicians are breaking news that are nothing at all? They are gone...rest their souls and may their families find peace.
amusing
This story hits home for me. My sister knew two of the victims. Their names were Jenny and Kyle and they played in the woodwind section of the Great Falls Symphony Orchestra. My sister is the principal clarinetist and she also played in a quintet with them, so she really knew them very well. The three remaining members of the quintet are absoltutely devastated.
This story gets much, much worse. Jenny and Kyle were engaged to each other and were going to marry later this summer:( Kyle had just gotten a new job in a Symphony in Canada and Jenny was going to go for her doctorate. They were just finishing up their final season in Great Falls.
My sister said that their skydiving trip was cancelled several times and Jenny started getting nervous and I don’t think she even wanted to do it.
They were both so young and talented and had the world in front of them.
My sister also told me that as of 1:30 PM Eastern time, Kyle’s parents still didn’t know. How awful.
This whole thing has made me feel sick. I didn’t know them, but they are my sister’s friends and she is so devasted right now.
