LOS ANGELES - A judge on Monday suspended David Hasselhoff's visitation rights with his two teenage daughters after last week's surfacing of a videotape showing the recovering alcoholic apparently intoxicated in his Las Vegas home.
"This videotape changes the landscape, it just does," Superior Court Judge Mark Juhas said.
The judge set a May 21 hearing to determine if the tape is authentic and who was responsible for its release. His visitation order will remain in effect until then.
Hasselhoff, 54, did not attend the hearing, but his former wife Pamela Bach was there.
Portions of the video were aired last week on syndicated entertainment shows. The video shows Hasselhoff, wearing only blue jeans, lying on a floor and clumsily eating a hamburger while one of his daughters videotapes him and reproves him about his drinking.
Hasselhoff said in a statement last week that he's a recovering alcoholic and the tape was made to show him what he can be like under the influence of alcohol.
"I have learned from it and I am back on my game," he said then.
A message left Monday for Hasselhoff's attorney, Melvin Goldsman, was not immediately returned.
Attorney Debra Opri, who represents Bach, said her client was upset about the release of the tape and stunned by her former husband's behavior in front of their daughter.
"She's devastated the videotape was put out in the press," Opri said. "When a mother hears this from her daughter, what does she think? `I haven't protected my daughters.'"
The syndicated entertainment shows said the tape was made about three months ago by Hasselhoff's 16-year-old daughter, Taylor-Ann, in his home in Las Vegas, where the former "Baywatch" star had been appearing in a stage version of "The Producers."
On the tape, a girl's voice is heard saying: "Dad, you need to promise me you're not gonna get alcohol tonight, OK?"
"If you get alcohol tonight, you're fired from your show tomorrow," the girl continues. "And a doctor's coming over here in the morning to check your alcohol level and if there's any alcohol in your system you're gonna be fired from the show. Tomorrow. You hear me? No alcohol."
"OK," Hasselhoff replies in a slurred voice.
Hasselhoff filed for divorce from Bach last year after 16 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. Bach, 43, filed her own divorce papers, also citing irreconcilable differences.
In addition to Taylor-Ann, they have a 14-year-old daughter. The couple share joint custody of the girls, Opri said.
My ex wife had 3 sons from a previous marriage and their dad was a serious drunk. He crashed the car with the boys during his weekend visitation. He dragged a toddler, a 4 year old and a seven year old through a swamp and woods to avoid talking to the police.
"And go find that disgusting little pig daughter of mine! I am gonna STRAIGHTEN her out! Then I am going to break into some Republican's house and put a tire iron through their skulls!"
I guess posting that aided your self-esteem......
I wonder how the video became public.
I guess what happens in Vegas doesn't necessarily stay in Vegas.
But in this case we are talking about a guy losing his rights to his kids because he had a few to many in a hotel room.
That's pretty Big Brother to me. No drunk driving, no abuse, no law breaking, but he is deemed an unfit parent anyway and loses his custody, even if only temporarily?
Does he have to go to AA now just to be allowed to see his children? It just seems so unfair.
But in this case we are talking about a guy losing his rights to his kids because he had a few to many in a hotel room his Las Vegas home.
How could you not consider that kind of behavior in front of a child to be abusive? Just listen to the child’s interrogation of him - she’s a teenager and his addiction has turned her into a 12 step instructor. That’s not a proper part of a child’s life. He needs to get his shirt together.
Good grief. The guy was not just dining and having a few drinks. He was obviously wasted while his teenage children were present. If the house had caught on fire or some other catastrophe had happened, he would not have been able to take care of his kids. Not to mention that he's teaching his daughters that getting brain dead on that level is ok. A judge would be negligent in not suspending visitation.
Whose fault is that? Not his. Probably that is the mothers mentality showing thru in the kids or propaganda they learned in school.
He didn't look that way to me. He was awake, eating, and carry on a conversation
A judge would be negligent in not suspending visitation.
"Visitation" and joint custody are different things. He has joint custody, which means his is an equal co-parent. Do you really want judges sticking their noses into homes and taking children away from parents whose non-abusive, non-violent behavior the judge sees fit to turn his nose up at?
Joint custody, as does visitation, generally requires that the children are kept in a safe, moral environment. A parent can't provide either of those things if the parent is out of his mind on drugs or alcohol. And yes, I would expect judges to "stick their nose" into a situation like this one.
Oh, so now you're acting like it's "his" home, just because he paid for it. We all know who REALLY owns "his" home - and it ain't Hasselhoff.
So if the goobermint wants to convict Hasselhoff of thoughtcrime in their house, it's OK with me...
