Dog-mauling victim faces multiple surgeries

PORT ST. LUCIE — When Dawn Sharbuno's husband came into her hospital room Thursday night where she lay with nearly her entire face ripped off by the family dog, she worried he would leave her.

No, he told her, "We've been through hurricanes together. We've been through everything together. I'm not going to leave you now."

Sharbuno, 46, underwent eight hours of reconstructive surgery at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where she was flown after the attack. She has three or four more surgeries to go.

She had just gotten out of the pool and was sitting outside Thursday evening when her adopted dog, Roscoe, a black and tan chow-shepherd mix, came over. Her husband said she reached down to pet Roscoe when he jumped up and bit her.

"Her face was completely off across the bridge of her nose," Harry "Lou" Sharbuno remembered. "The only thing holding it on was her chin. It was like something out of a horror movie."

The couple adopted Roscoe from the St. Lucie County Humane Society less than a month ago after losing a dog to cancer. Harry Sharbuno said Roscoe never showed aggression toward people and only grumbled over food with their other dog, Venus.

"He's a beautiful dog," Sharbuno said. "He's very deceiving."

Sharbuno said his wife worked as a truck driver before a disabling accident three years ago, while he was recently laid off from an interior contracting job. The couple broke down and bought health insurance for both of them just two days before the mauling.

Port St. Lucie animal control officers took custody of Roscoe, who was returned to the St. Lucie County Humane Society Friday morning. He will be quarantined for 10 days - at a cost of $20 per day to the Sharbunos. Then, the couple will have the option of reclaiming the dog, giving him to a rescue service or having him euthanized.

At the humane society Friday, Roscoe wagged his tail and took shelter manager David Robertson's commands to sit and shake hands. Robertson said the dog arrived as a stray from Port St. Lucie Animal Control.

Before being handed over to the Sharbunos, Roscoe - like all dogs - was given a temperament test in which a humane society employee gave him a bowl of food and then tried to take it away. Roscoe passed.

The humane society tested him again Friday morning, and Roscoe again did not bark or bite, Robertson said.

Robertson said he received about 30 calls Friday morning from people who had heard about the attack.

"They're concerned about the dog, and they're concerned about the lady."

Yes, you’re probably right, the article is written poorly IMO. It shouldn’t matter how friendly the dog was before or after such an incident, it’s got a problem.

Hopefully the lady will recover completely.

No kidding. I was thinking the same thing. Why is this dog still alive? I’d’a killed it right then and there. No telling when the psycho thing is gonna go off again, so why take a chance?

I’ve read that if you are getting attacked by a dog, you should shove your arm, thumb-side pointing upward, down its throat. When you can’t get it down any more, make a fist and suffocate the thing to death.

We were taught the same thing in the police academy back in the 60's.

It's best (time permitting) to wrap a shirt or something similar in size, around your hand and arm. The dog is supposed to be unable to bite while he is choking to death.

My only encounter with a pit bull was pulling one off a German shepherd. Only thing I could think of in that fraction of a second was to grab the pit bull's hind legs and lift him away from the other dog. When he let go of the other dog he tried to curl upward to reach me. All I could think of to do was to start swinging him around in a circle, letting centrifugal force keeping his business end from getting me. I also was in the vicinity of a pine tree and I figured if things got any worse I would adjust my swing and plaster him up against the tree.

Didn't have to....the dog's owner showed up and I handed him the two hind legs I was gripping and said "Here's your dog...have fun".

I've since gotten advice that I was very lucky...and never try that gain.

I will try to remember that if I am ever in that terrifying position...I doubt it that I will!

I don’t know why... but I think that’s going to stick with me forever.

I hope I’m not attacked by a chihuahua.

I always have and always will love dogs... but I prefer smaller ones! I had a nice chunk of my cheek flapping in the wind, but it did not hurt and I was lucky a good plastic surgeon was on duty in the emergency room.

German Shepards have the tendency to suffer from senility as they get older. It’s an awful thing for such a beautiful and devoted breed, most of the times they end up being euthanized because they become dangerous due to their senility. Are you okay?

What’s deceiving is YOUR assumptions about him VS the REALITY of him.

His name was “Cho.”

How to survive an anaconda attack (not really):

1. If you are attacked by an anaconda, do not run. The snake is faster than you are.

2. Lie flat on the ground. Put your arms tight against your sides, your legs tight against one another.

3. Tuck your chin in.

4. The snake will begin to nudge and climb over your body.

5. Do not panic.

6. After the snake has examined you, it will begin to swallow you from the feet end - always from the feet end. Permit the snake to swallow your feet and ankles. Do not panic!

7. The snake will now begin to suck your legs into its body. You must lie perfectly still. This will take a long time.

8. When the snake has reached your knees slowly and with as little movement as possible, reach down, take your knife and very gently slide it into the side of the snake’s mouth between the edge of its mouth and your leg, then suddenly rip upwards, severing the snake’s head.

9. Be sure you have your knife.

10. Be sure your knife is sharp.

Yes, I went out to see our friends’ old German shepherd. “He’s really sweet,” she said. He grabbed my forearm in a jaw-lock that I could barely break. I do NOT trust dogs. Mine included.

Ummm, I beg to differ. I have seen people in the trauma unit seriously hurt by cats. The only difference was that the cats were attacking strange people in their home ground. I remember this electric meter guy who came to our ER because of the house cat attacking him while he was trying to read the meter. Also, it was his first day in that area, the former worker quit so he took over his route. You’d never thing of a cat being so defensive but they are.

??? What will the rescue service do with him, recycle this loving dog-of-peace to another family? And why would the couple want the dog back? Yeeesh, why is there any option other than the one-way door?

Makes sense, but the paperwork on firing the weapon would take up the rest of the shift.
