The Weekend YouTube Musical Video thread
Self | 4/27/207 | Caramelgal

I didn’t’ see you post a tread for this weekend so I hope you don’t mind me starting one for this weekend. I’m curious to know who here is listening to what and why:

Here are some of my favorites:

Paolo Nutini - New Shoes - ‘cause it makes be feeling like buying some new shoes and going out dancing with my friends :),

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlhPfFnstR4

Rush – Freewill. Is it me or is Geddy Lee getting better looking as he gets older. Maybe it’s just because I’m older too. Maybe it’s the glasses and the soul patch or the fact he is still a guitar god and this band makes such great music. Best concert I’ve ever been to was Rush. “If you chose not to decide, you have still made a choice - I will choice a path that’s clear, I will choose Freewill”.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Peb_YEnA5MQ

I didn’t think I liked country music until I found Nickel Creek and the Smoothie Song and how cool, young, hip and musical “Country” could be:.

Then I “discovered” Little Big Town. They remind me of Fleetwood Mac and back in the day (with just a little more twang):

And speaking of Fleetwood Mac, my favorite song by Stevie Nicks: “I know I could have loved you but you would not let me”. “You’ll never get away from the sound of woman that loved you”.

I love Evanessance. Amy Lee has such an amazing voice:

Ben Harper – Diamonds on the Inside: “She made herself a bed of nails and she’s planning on putting it to use, ‘cause she had diamonds on the inside”;

Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel goofing around with Guitar Boogie.

And if you like that, try Nine Pound Hammer.

I’m big fan of African music, and have probably 300 African CDs. After seeing the following video on YouTube, I went on a quest to get a copy. I finally ordered a Freddie Gwala CD from TowerUK, but this song isn’t on it. I’m still looking for a copy. The song is beautiful:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzzycK1EfzE

Apparently little Freddie got locked up in South African prison for a few years for stealing a bicycle. I'd sing a sad song about that too, but it wouldn't be very pretty. I sing like a frog.

My favorite Australian guitarist is Jeff Lang. He's just jaw-droppingly amazing. I saw him in a little basement bar in New York, and he's mindblowing. Great singer/songwriter too:

I never heard of Tommy Emmanuel before – he’s excellent. Thanks for the link.

Another guitar god is Richard Thompson. He’s great on the electric, but I’ve never seen another human being who can play the acoustic like he can:

One more spooky classic, from a great old late-night television show David Sanborn used to do years ago:

Heartbreak Hotel: John Cale, Shawn Colvin & Richard Thompson

Richard Thompson is obviously a fine guitarist, but when he started singing I'm afraid he brought out my "strangle the folk singer" instinct. Sorry.

I hadn't heard of Tommy Emmanuel until recently. I followed a Little Green Footballs link to TE playing on YouTube a few months ago, and since then I've listened to dozens of his performances. He is self taught, and does not read music, but he can play anything he wants to. He uses his guitars for percussion, and they look it.

Chet Atkins gave his "Certified Guitar Player" award to only three other guitarists, and Tommy was one. Atkins had been Tommy's childhood idol. They ended up friends, and wrote songs together.

One more song, simple and slow, Angelina,
