The NHL has similar problems. I wonder if there ever can be head gear which would alleviate the problem?

as long as you have boards and goalposts and ‘astro’turf, not real likely, altho they have advanced the protective equipment , headgear , etc quite a bit the last few years, maybe they need to try mini-airbags, ;-)
It’s a physical sport, hard to take that out of it, no matter how well one is fitted out.
