How do you identify gluten-free petfood?
Does it say so on the package?

What’s a good brand then?
I’m getting a dog for my son in a few days, and I’d like to keep the animal healthy.

I haven't seen any product of Pedigree's on the recall list.

Thankfully, Pedigree doesn't have their stuff made by Menu Foods.

As I said in private, http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/ seems to be a good source.

http://www.kumpi.com/ is also supposed to be quite good. There are a lot of good sources of non-gluten foods.

This is an excellent dog food review site.

dog food analysis

We use Purina Mills (PMI) Exclusive (NOT to be confused with supermarket Purina). It costs a bit more, but our dog is small and she poops less with it.

Read the labels. No corn (corn is especially bad for dogs).

The big time competitors that I know in the dog world use the ProPlan by Purina. There's a large breed puppy formula (you didn't say what kind of dog, but if it's a puppy and one of the large breeds, you definitely should feed that), a high-energy formula, and several others.

ProPlan was not implicated in the Menu Foods recall, although Alpo (another Purina brand) was.

If you want to go the high-end health food route, I feed my dogs Breeder's Choice AvoDerm. There's also a brand called Nature's Variety/Prairie, which operates on the concept of rotating dry kibble, frozen raw, and canned diets based on various meats (chicken, lamb, beef, venison). I am feeding my cat their cat food, and I'm thinking about rotating my dogs onto it.

Nutro dry dog food has no gluten in it. I've fed my dog that brand for years. You can buy it at PetsMart. I also supplement the diet with home made dog food. There's lots of information on the web on how to make it and what to put in it to make for a balanced diet.

Good luck with the new dog.

I heard from a vet that most of the solid ground canned food that you have to spoon out of the can is probably OK, and the ones with chunks in gravy are more suspect.

All Science Diet pet foods are free of wheat gluten. The corn gluten Science Diet uses in some of its products is from a local US supplier and is not part of the recall. Science Diet uses rice protein in four of its products. It is not from the supplier involved in the recall, has been tested by Science Diet, and found to be free of melamine.

I’m a Science Diet Demo Rep and have written confirmation of the above.

Also, thehonestkitchen.com. Their foods are dehydrated raw and have to mixed with water before feeding. And since they are raw, you have to handle them accordingly. They do have a grain free formula tho. My girls are doing very well on it, but I also keep the Innova too.

If you have the time to do it, research recipes for homemade dog food. There are so many things you can cook (or feed raw) to your dogs.
I’ve been supplementing my dog’s meals with chicken, brown rice, sweet potatoes, raw carrots. She’s a GR and will eat ANYTHING.
