This was a hard piece to write, because guns by definition are manly, except for Berettas, gold-plated TEC9s, .25 caliber pistols or anything made by the French. To simplify things, I have limited it to modern cartridge firearms a man might, can, and should collect and shoot. There are certainly other manly weapons, and you may have a different list. As long as the list contains nothing French, gold-plated, .25 or with pearl grips (which Patton correctly observed are the mark of a New Orleans pimp), it is a good list.

Speaking of waterproof locks, I have read that some hunters smear a bit of beeswax around the lip of the pan so that when the frizzen is closed, a watertight seal is formed. The secret to good sparking is to keep both the frizzen face and the striking edge of the flint clean and dry - I wipe both after each shot.

For quite a while, I thought that I needed a "manly handgun," and in order to be sure that we keep the wild elephant population down in my neighborhood, I decided on a TC Contender, in .375JDJ. I figured, what could be better than having a handgun that can be converted to fire "less manly" cartridges, like the .45-70 and .444 Marlin "buffalo" cartridges (just to keep there populations down too).
But then I came to my senses, and just bought a S&W 625-5...

I have the 6 inch blue. Is that stainless an 8 incher ?
To: Eric in the Ozarks
Yes, 8 inches, and it is nickel. The photo really doesn’t do it justice. The 6 inch is perfect ... the 2” kicks like a pi$$ed-off mule. I love Pythons.

I "retired" my 1971/72 vintage (bought it new) after less than 5 boxes of shells. Its clean and put safely away; there are other big bangers I can shoot.
The price of these Colts continues to move up and I wouldn't be surprised if a 95 percent condition 6 inch stainless or nickel doesn't reach $2000.
I've always wanted one of the last Pythons sold as a hunting kit. The gun was 8 inch stainless, with a scope and came in a carry case.
Very tidy.

He forgot the .475 Linebaugh. 400grains of lead at 1400 FPS. Mine has taken a 900lb Alaskan Brown. This one is on a modified Ruger Redhawk frame, half the weight of the smallest S&W 500 revolver. Kicks a lot harder than any revolver I've fired, including the S&W 500.

Get a really cool tricked out Wilson Combat 1911 and add that to the list.,
Then add a nice old school 1960s vintage colt detective special and a Winchester model 97 12 ga trench gun.

They carry sig sauer P-226 9mm pistols. M-4 carbines..and other larger weapons.
To: P8riot
That is sweet! What does the conversion set you back and who did it?

I don’t think they forgot the big boomers. They were mentioning fairly common and easily acquired firearms except for possibly the Barrett. If they had, they would have tied up the list with custom double rifles and Thompson Contenders.
On the website, Sixguns, there was an article on Linebaugh. He had contacted one of the gunwriters and was about to show him one of the effects of his revolver. The guy hid behind a car while Linebaugh touched it off.
Saturday, I had the chance to shoot my friend’s Freedom Arms .454 Casull. I tried to hit a small log at about 270 yards away. The log survive.
I had forgotten that was the first time with a large caliber since my eye surgery. Oops. The eye is ok but this morning I had trouble with the other one.

Mine is a 4” issued to my dad by his department in ‘68. When they switched to Model 66 S&Ws he bought it and gave it to me some years later. I don’t shoot it much but it is obviously my favorite handgun.

Do you happen to know why the department switched? Just curious.
To: MileHi
The conversion was done by Hamilton Bowen (
Bowen Classic Arms). I got it second hand, but the conversion costs $1400.00 plus the cost of the pistol. I traded a custom AR-15 for it. Bowen doesn't recommend the Redhawk conversion to .475 Linebaugh anymore because the recoil is too severe (he is right). He will convert Super Redhawks however.

I am not an expert at fire arms, but I don’t find a GLOCK to be manly at all. Too artificial.

I have a Mod 22 in .40 S&W. Its a very good handgun and easy to service.
