Election Campaign Season Prayer Thread
KAC | 4/23/07 | Knitting a Conundrum and Others

The Primary Election Campaign season is now upon us.  I ask you to join me in prayer that the right and conservative persons stand up, get noticed, and get elected.  I ask you to join me in daily prayer that no deceits of the enemy blind us, that all persons who try to deceive us about the right and good be shown for what they are, and that we can all come together to do what we need for our nation in harmony, clarity and with the blessing of God.

Some quotes to consider:

If men of wisdom and knowledge, of moderation and temperance, of patience, fortitude and perseverance, of sobriety and true republican simplicity of manners, of zeal for the honour of the Supreme Being and the welfare of the commonwealth; if men possessed of these other excellent qualities are chosen to fill the seats of government, we may expect that our affairs will rest on a solid and permanent foundation.
Samuel Adams, letter to Elbridge Gerry, November 27, 1780

When one rules justly over men, ruling in the fear of God,
he dawns on them like the morning light,
like the sun shining forth upon a cloudless morning,
like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.
But godless men are all like thorns that are thrown away;
for they cannot be taken with the hand;
but the man who touches them arms himself with iron and the shaft of a spear,
and they are utterly consumed with fire.
2 Samuel 23: 4,6-7 RSV

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." -- Abraham Lincoln

I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great to me. There was a little city with few men in it; and a great king came against it and besieged it, building great siegeworks against it.  But there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that poor man.

But I say that wisdom is better than might, though the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heeded. The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.  Ecclesiastes 9:13-18 RSV

It is necessary for every American, with becoming energy to endeavor to stop the dissemination of principles evidently destructive of the cause for which they have bled. It must be the combined virtue of the rulers and of the people to do this, and to rescue and save their civil and religious rights from the outstretched arm of tyranny, which may appear under any mode or form of government.

Mercy Warren, History of the Rise, Progress, and Termination of the American Revolution, 1805

Thus says the LORD: "Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his arm, whose heart turns away from the LORD. He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land.

"Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit."

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately corrupt; who can understand it?

"I the LORD search the mind and try the heart, to give to every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings."

Jeremiah 17: 5-10 RSV

Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual — or at least that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country.

Samuel Adams, in the Boston Gazette, April 16, 1781

My Prayer for Us

O Lord, have mercy on us,
each and every one of us
for trusting in our own strong hand
instead of in your hands.

O Lord, you who know all hearts,
soften our hearts,
awaken us to where we have failed,
awaken us to whom it is who gives us our strength,
and teach us to walk in your ways.

Today, O Lord, I send up my prayers
particularly for those seeking high office to be our leaders,
and for we, those of us who following the rules of our land,
must work, and choose and aid
in the selection of those who will lead us.

Lord, we see the darkness sweeping across the land,
the urgings of those who would have us repudiate the things this land was founded for,
those who would have us call evil good, and good evil,
those who would wreck home and family to prove a point in their ideology,
who would leave us weak, and vunerable,
who would have us sacrifice our children,
who would turn us totally away from you.

Lord, we know how important the stakes are,
and in our fears and anxieties, we turn to you.
Fill us with your wisdom, that we might make the right decisions.
Fill us with your patience, that in our fear we do not to the expedient thing,
but act according to your will.
Fill us with your light, so that we may see the traps the enemy has set.
Fill us with your hope, that we may have the heart to do the long task ahead.

Lord, you are our King.
Have mercy on this land, where, although many have chosen the dark,
many of us still work and strive for your cause.
Have mercy on this land,
That we may reclaim it's bright promise.
Lift up the hearts of those who would work for its good,
And bring clear to our minds how we should help in this political season.

Let the ones who will best aid in your plans for our country
step forth happily to answer your call.
Open our eyes to the deceits of the enemy,
And surround us always with your light.

In the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, we ask this of you, O Father!

Amen.

Our Father which art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done in earth,
as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil:

For Thine is the kingdom,
and the power,
and the glory, for ever.
Amen.

Oh Lord I know this country has forsaken you more and more each passing hour. And I know this country deserves what we have sowed. Please Father for the sake of the few who still acknowledge you as Lord and Savior, for the sake of our children that we love so much, please have Mercy and restore unto us what satan is trying so desperately to steal. Let us be of good sound mind in electing the right person to lead our nation. You said, Lord,

....." If My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

2 Chronicles 7:14
