Go to a gun dealer. Pick out a gun. Fill out form. Give money. Wait 10 days. Go to gun dealer. Pick up gun.

1) Get checkbook, cash or credit card.
2) Get ID.
3) Visit gunstore or local ‘bodega’.
4) Tell the guy behind the counter that you want a gun.
5) Give the man money, if you chose a gunstore in step 3, give the man your ID.
6) Put newly acquired gun into purse, loaded.
7) Forget you have it until you need to use it.
8) Repeat as often as you can afford.

Some people will want you to practice. That is not required, but if you don’t, be prepared to be completely freaked out if you have to actually use it.

The ‘bullet’ comes out the end with the hole in it. So be sure to point the hole at the bad guy before you pull the trigger thing (ask the guy at the store to show that to you).

Have fun, and good hunting.

Oh model! If you’ve got fairly big hands get a Glock 19. Otherwise a SIG P239 is really nice. Either way 9mm to begin with. Accept no substitutes.

Visit your local “bros” … black or Hispanic and like magic, green card, food stamps, GUNS, explosives, anything you want, if you have the money.

Now, Rose, I don't want to sound cynical or unwelcoming but you're the second eager newbie we've had today just bursting with enthusiasm for buying a "gun" without any apparent knowledge of the subject material. If you're trolling for knuckle-dragging red meat I'm afraid you're going to go away disappointed, but on the assumption that you're genuine I'll give you some real advice.

Learn to shoot first. Go to a range, get classes, try all the rental firearms you can. When you find a make or model that you can consistently shoot well with that'd be the place to start. Become aware that ownership of a firearm carries with it the responsibility for safe storage, safe transport, and safety on the range.

Learn Jeff Cooper's rules until you can recite them in your sleep. At that point there are several options. Most ranges have adjunct stores (that's where they make their operating money), many sporting goods stores have firearms sections, and there are still a number of stores specializing in firearms. You will be required to show identification and make out several forms detailing the type of firearm purchased, serial number, your own identifications, and statements that you swear or affirm that you are not a felon, a drug addict, subject to a restraining order, or mentally unstable. These will be checked against a database in Washington D.C. during the waiting period. You will not be allowed to exit the store with the firearm until these conditions are satisfied. I am unaware of the length of the waiting period in California these days but I am certain that someone else on this board is very familiar with it.

Lastly, practice. Take more courses and practice, practice, practice, and then more practice. If you ever have to use it in "the gravest extreme" that isn't the time to be wondering where the safety is.

Start with a .22 and get some target practice. .22 ammunition is cheap, and it also provides self-defense in a pinch.

After that, then you want to get a snub-nosed .38.
