Sunnyvale California cracks down on car repairs in driveways
Mercury News ^ | 4/4/07 | Stephen Baxter

Amateur car mechanics working in their driveways will face some new rules, including a ban on major repairs and working on more than two vehicles at once, the Sunnyvale City Council decided Tuesday night.

Minor repairs and maintenance such as oil changes are allowed in driveways, and can be done from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The new law forbids more than two projects at once, and all cars being worked on must be registered to a resident of the home or to an immediate family member.

The council voted 4-3 in favor of the new rules, with Councilmen John Howe, Chris Moylan and Ron Swegles opposed, in part because of enforcement concerns.

The move also comes after some Lakewood neighborhood residents complained that neighbors were drinking beer and socializing in driveways while car projects lay idle.

Two car hobbyists spoke against new restrictions at the meeting Tuesday night, saying the new law is too broad.

Sounds like a good time to move to another neighborhood... for a lot of reasons.

Still waiting for Lodi California to prohibit my neighbor from rebuilding and testing his race car. Maybe then I can get some sleep.

From my experience, these regulations sound as if they might be driven by the behavior of some of our immigrants.

They'll stand around cars drinking beer and blasting their accordian music off the radios until after 3 a.m. if you let them. They don't care that they're keeping everyone awake.

It's all about them.

Since a crap shack there sells for the same price as my 5000 SF, 8 car garage house in Texas, I'm pretty sure a couple cars in the driveway won't bring property values down much.

They are already stupid high.

Since most of them are probably not registered and owned by illegals... the law will most likely affect only law-abiding citizens of substance.

I am ok with the cars in the driveway being worked on. My husband has a few hobbies of his own. I do draw the line when I have to ask him to take the car parts out of the tub so I can take a bath. (sounds like a red neck thing doesn’t it).

Well they already prohibit using your fireplace on some days here in the central valley. We get all the smog from the liberal SF bay area where they are buying carbon offsets and not modifying their lifestyle. The wind blows it inland to the central valley and we must modify our lifestyle to accomodate their excess pollution.

Good thing we don't live in Sunnyvale!

My husband had only two qualifications when we moved: (1) outside City of Atlanta and Fulton County (he'd had enough) and (2) NO SUBDIVISION REGULATIONS or homeowners' association with any enforcement powers.

We live in an older Cobb County suburb . . . we had a TR-6 up on blocks for a couple of weeks while we parted it out and sold the carcass, I've built and painted cavaletti for my riding instructor in the driveway, and at any given time there are likely to be dog jumps, bumper catapults and weave poles all over the yard.

We're kinda used to freedom . . .

So if my car dies in my buddy's driveway, I have to push it home before fixing it?

You mean that you don't appreciate Mexican polka music at all hours of the night? How intolerant. < /sarc>
