Oh, I hate to hear that. Did you see the owner of the company on the news? They asked if people would be reimbursed and he hemmed and hawed about it. The news people on Headline News commented that he skipped answering.

I found it interesting the number of dead dogs from the dogs AT Menu Foods that have died, not the actual number.

BTW, for some reason the mod moved this to chat, I have no idea why since the others are still in News/Activism. This wasn't posted to be political, but to inform.

I saw the other day the pet food industry is a $15 billion industry annually, so there are a lot of pet owners out there. I personally think this is very important news.

In my case, as is with millions of other Americans, our pets are like family.

I missed the report on CNN tonight. I predict there will be a class action lawsuit, and the lawyers will make a fortune, while the people who lost their pets will get nothing. But this is not about that at this point, I just want to make sure my pets are okay (I was feeding them food on the recall list before I found out about it) and to keep my many other friends with pets informed. I get most of my news from FR, and most of my friends don’t. And there are new companies added to the list almost daily since this story broke.

This has opened up my eyes, and I am seriously concerned about the imported human food now. One reason I value FR is because freepers have the ability to share info, research, and provide info we can’t get on the news. I trust FR more than the MSM.

The conversation with my vet yesterday raised my alarm, as does my friend’s sister’s dog. There were several freepers who posted on other threads who have sick dogs, this is no joke, it’s not funny.

I pinged freeper Fawn on this story the other day. We have had many disagreements on various threads, but I know he/she loves animals, so I thought should know. This is not a political subject.

Again, I thank you for the pings and the posts. Please keep me posted and I’ll do the same.

The management of Menu Foods (it is a publicly traded company, so there is no one “owner”) is not in a position to guarantee that owners of affected pets will be fully reimbursed for veterinary expenses. They can’t manufacture money out of thin air, and if this incident pushes the company into bankruptcy (which it certainly could), a bankruptcy court — not executives or owners of the company — will determine who gets compensation and how much.

Menu Foods had 2006 net income of CAD 6.4 million, and 2005 net LOSS of CAD 55 million. The matter of determining which pets were sickened or died due to this food vs. other costs is very expensive and uncertain, and could result in expensive litigation. And there will no doubt be many pet owners trying to get compensation for vet visits and tests done as a precaution, even though no illness was found. It would be totally irresponsible of the company’s management to make blanket promises of reimbursement which they may not be able to deliver on, and which might induce pet owners to incur huge veterinary bills that they are unable to afford themselves, believing that it will be paid for by the company.
