Sima Qian, the premier Chinese historian of some 2100 years ago, repeatedly wrote of "monkeys in the hats" [the hats were the ceremonial hats of Confucian officials]. This was the term of abuse these same monkeys reciprocally used on one another. Emperor Gaozu was famous for liking to snatch such hats off and then urinating into them.
Thus one ought not to pay too much attention to the externalities.
