We had a Mama wild turkey and three poults wander into our back yard one day, from the woods behind our house. They were so cute! When the Mama and two of the babies went back into the trees, the third one stayed, munching on the tall grass. When it realized the Mama was gone, it started chirping for her. Then you could hear Mama calling it from the woods, and the poult followed the sound back through the bushes. It was so much fun to watch!

I'd never see wild turkeys before moving to MA. Some friends have an old house on 5 acres, and she was my co-leader for our sons' Cub Scout Den. We used to have meetings at her house, and we'd see the wild turkeys wandering down her road all the time. They're actually neat looking birds.

Actually...my mom says that in Rockford, IL (where she is)...there are so many wild turkeys now that the city is delcaring them a nuisance!

This is a mid-size city...90 miles west of Chicago.

Egg is unattended... is that normal for eagles to leave their eggs?

I'm just guessing...but I bet she does a quick fly-around to keep her flying muscles okay.

I don't blame her. It must be tedious sitting on a round object all day and night.

My little oregon juncos leave their eggs unattended now and then, which always makes me nervous, but so far they always come back to the nest.

More likely than not, one of the eagles is sitting just out of camera view on a branch of another tree. They won't leave the egg totally unattended. If you look at Camera 1, it is trained on a branch above the nest. One of them can be seen sitting there, from time to time.

This is from the MA site:

The eagles have begun incubation of their second egg which was first sighted the morning of March 4. The first egg was laid the afternoon of February 28, which was a week earlier than any previously recorded egg at the Barton Cove nest. If the 35-day incubation period goes well, we can expect the first egg to hatch around April 4, with any other eggs hatching in the same time interval in which they were laid.

We still may see more eggs here!

Okay, so I'm ten minutes late with my news flash. Work is interfering with my egg watching...
