Spring fever has got me. I want to get out of the house, away from the computer, and dig in the dirt. Getting ready to start a new rose bed. Anybody else out there nuts about roses?
J&P are good rose producers. They aren’t the only good ones out there, but they do some outstanding ones.
My roses are all budded out and I am anxiously awaiting the first flush of blossoms. I have:
Miss All American Beauty
Tropicana (one of my favorites - thank you GodBlessUSA for helping me identify it.)
Helena Renaissance
Bridal Pink
American Dream (my favorite red rose.)
Whiskey Mac
Chicago Peace (a bare root I planted last month.)
Midas Touch (a pretty yellow climber)
Sunbright
Century Two
I also have a variety of miniature roses and carpet roses.
Good luck with your rose garden, Knitting A Conundrum. I hope it is a thriving success. :-)
Thank you!
We’re still turning the bed. Our soil is pretty alkali, like desert soils normally are, so I have been double digging it,bit by bit, and adding gypsum, sulfur, compost and a little sand. We’ve also just planted a crabapple in the front yard (a Sugar Tyme) and an Italian plum in the backyard. The backyard’s in bad shape, and will need some serious TLC, but the front yard had been neglected, too.
I will test the soil one more time before I plant. If it’s still a bit on the alkali side, then I will just use a good tree and shrub potting soil to amend the hole I plant them in and mulch heavily. I’m also starting to wonder what companion plants I ought to plant in this bed. There will be room for some of them, for sure.
Rose and Garden Ping!
How does your garden grow?
Mine Got Buds~~~bump~~~;0)
I located a photo I took last year of one of my favorite roses; my hybrid tea, "Tropicana". Some people have real good luck with it, others just can't get it to grow. Mine blooms steady all spring, summer and, last year, even up until Thanksgiving it had blossoms.
Sounds like you are really getting into gardening. Isn't it fun?
Hi! :)
I have to read through the comments. I’m reading, quickly, so many interesting comments. I just cut a new bed for roses. I have a couple of months before I can buy them but their beds will be ready. :)
It is. I am in Boise...across the street from my subdivision is a big piece of undeveloped property that’s all sagebrush.
But when I lived in Ogden, before we got here, the house had a smallish yard that had 2 huge spruce (there were about 4 on the property) a very large walnut tree, and a horse chestnut. The fences were covered with wisteria. There had been a rose garden, evidently planted before the walnut got big, but what grew best back there was columbine. Not enough sun for healthy roses.
Now I have sun, and I am getting back to the type of gardening I want to do. And with so little on the lot, I have pretty much a blank slate. It’s fun to get to do all of this from scratch.
Very Good,,,Whatta’ View...;0)
Your Veteran’s Honor Standard?
(The one you call a lolly-pop?...;^)
Your location is achingly beautiful... I DROOL..........
That is exquisite.... Mama Mia!!
Hehe. How is the fragrance?
As you know, I don’t presently have a garden, but many to admire around here.
In fact, as I walked from the bus stop to home after work this evening, I was drawn around a corner to a particular yard where I admired two very old rose bushes, one in full bloom.
I vowed to go back and snap photos (was still light enough), but then was distracted by President Bush’s helo-cade over my neighborhood and plumb forgot about the rose pictures.
Sometimes, distractions are more important! LOL!
You need to do some inside gardening, I believe...
Hi,Dita,,,that’s what it turned in to,,,still growin’...;0)
Got pix?...;^)
Mite have some soon...;0)
I’ll be back tomorrow with a couple pics of what’s bloomed this spring. They’re huge! Don’t know the names of them, the J&P tags that came with them are long gone. One’s a creamy white and the other brilliant red.
Saw a “Veteran’s Pride” for sale at Orchard Hardware last weekend. Might just buy that one since I’m a proud veteran.
Pics are good!
