State AG tours Duke lacrosse house

By Anne Blythe, Staff Writer

DURHAM - State Attorney General Roy Cooper spent 23 minutes this morning with special prosecutors and other investigators at the vacant house that spawned the Duke lacrosse case. Special prosecutors James Coman and Mary Winstead arrived at the house with Cooper and several other investigators.

The prosecutors were inside the house at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd. and in the backyard, measuring the edge of a rusty fence to the back door.

The house was where the Duke lacrosse team held a spring break party one year ago this week. Afterward, as escort-service dancer hired by team members accused some of the players of gang-raping her. Sexual assault and kidnapping charges were subsequently brought against three team members, Dave Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann.

Coman and Winstead were assigned to the case in January, after Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong asked to be removed.

The N.C. State Bar has lodged ethical complaints against Nifong for his handling of the cases against the three players, and Nifong is now in a battle to save his law license.

Cooper and the prosecutors declined to comment as they left the Buchanan Boulevard property.

In January, when the attorney general took over the case, he said the special prosecutors would go over all the evidence and interview key witnesses.

Throughout their investigation, the special prosecutors have kept Cooper informed of their findings.

“At this point, we expect the investigation to wrap up in the next few weeks,” said Jennifer Canada, assistant public information officer for the attorney general. “Our attorneys have continued to interview witnesses and investigate evidence.”

They better be willing to say that it was not credible that the claimed events took place in the space in that bathroom. They are also likely trying to remind the public at large that they are out there.

They are taking so long the public at large may be forgetting the charges may soon be dropped. They don't want this to come as a huge surprise to the public.

Actually, without even concidering bias in any direction, they have a significant amount of work to do to confirm or refute all of Nifongs work on the case.

And people are watching.

If I were them, I would not rush to any conclusions.

LOL. They should wait until it's night for that. :)

But that would interfere with the photo op.

The house surely has much to say, but nothing that will please Cooper or Nifong. " The Lacrosse players are innocent." it repeats over and over.

That photo looks to me like it was taken from inside the house next door ~ not by the press corps. Disclaimer: I have not looked at other links or other photos.

And now that I have looked at the link provided: that picture was taken 2/24/07; and, unless the AG's office knew that a press photog lived next door, and was home, I don't think it's fair to say it was a "photo op."

On the other hand, "Let's get this travesty over with!" Come on, SP, end it!

The state would probably STILL like to see the defendants convicted of SOME kind of charges, in order to spare itself
political and financial liability. And as long as it can
operate in the dark and with a compliant press, it may be able to get its wish.

Help keep the lights focused brightly on Durham :
