Honestly, I think that's why Atkins and South Beach are so successful. We've become a less active society, thereby needing less grains and carbs.
But they aren't 'long term' successful. Folks go off and on them, but most go off and stay off.
They're the most common of the "I tried it diets". Though I respect SB just a tiny bit more.
