just joking- if you can reboot in safe mode then you are halfway to fixing it. - what did you do recently to change the configuration of the computer? anything? we need much mor einformation than a black screen
Ok..here goes. I was removing some programs. Next time I restarted I received an error message. So I followed the instructions to fix which led me to the Windows website and it told me to do the following: chkdsk.exe, start/run -cmd, then type chkdsk/f, then type y. After I did that is when I starting having the problem. I wish I could remember the exact error message I initially received. What I can remember is that is said something about RUN DLL?? Error. It also instructed me to run: eventvwr and look for something with the number 1005, which led me to the above instructions. I hope this makes sense to you.
See if it will let you boot into the last good configuration. A system restore, given your circumstance, may be another workable option.
Sounds like you may have inadvertently removed a driver when you were removing those programs.
ok, it sounds like you had a hard disk problem, and chkdsk fixed it, but had to delete a necessary DLL file.
Bad, but unavoidable. The disk had errors on it so it had to fix them.
Now you probably just need to replace the deleted files. The easiest way is to put in your Windows installation disk, and select REPAIR A CURRENT INSTALLATION
To prevent this in the future do a disk check and defrag every month or two.
I tried that already. Would it have something to do with the system not recognizing my service tag? I'm working with a Dell laptop and the last time I purchased and downloaded some anti-virum software it would not allow me to register it because it did not recognize my service tag. After many call to Dell service, I became frustrated because they wanted me to purchase help. I will never buy another dell product. It's only 2 yrs. old.

Although it's cumbersome, I'm a liberal (ha-ha!) user of the
"Print Screen" button.
Just hit it, "Paste" that saved screen-shot to Word or WordPad
and print it out immediately.
Yes, sometimes the computer gets locked-up and you just have to
write down the error message, but it can be helpful many times.

IN SAFE MODE
right click on START
Left click on Explore
Drag and drop files or folders onto your CD-R drive
then double click on the CD-R drive
Right click on an empty area of the files list (right side of screen) and select "Record Now."
This will work in Win XP in Safe Mode.
Once you have your critical data backed up, reinstall windows.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to offer your help! I've started the process of reinstalling Windows. Now, any suggestions for alternate brands for laptops. I need to purchase one for a daughter in college. Also, I will bookmark the suggestions for later use when I'm ready to buy a new model.
You pick 'Install Windows'. It will detect a current installation and ask you if you want to repair or fresh install. Pick repair.
I like the Compact I bought for my daughter. 100g hard drive and a meg of memory with 64 speed running vista. Nice weight and looks. Costs around $749.00
Boot the PC to Safe Mode, go to Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System Restore and select Restore my computer to an earlier time.
Then just select a restore point from before you were removing programs.
If that doesn't work, shut down, insert your XP CD and boot from it then run a Repair installation of Windows.
