Friends of ours installed a Murphy bed in their small house and were happy with it (though it was for guests).

I'll be traveling 3 weeks from this coming Sunday -- and yes, I've been enjoying being home. They cut our travel budgets this year so I won't be traveling much; I am estimating 5 trips this year though I might be able to squeeze in a 6th. I will be missing some regular events.

If you bring a laptop and log in to the UT on your travels, I guess you could say the Flying Castle is along for the ride.

While there is probably a kit or two available to make a Murphy bed out of whatever you have, most any competent carpenter should be able to cobble something together for you.

Consider using gas-filled cylinders, normally used to hold up carhoods and minivan tailgates, as part of the assembly to balance the load.

One thing you must make absolutely sure about, that when the bed is stowed it is securely stowed, and won't fall out on you. Even using common barrel-bolt latches is not a bad solution.

Also, think about how you will use the space made available. Maybe a nice fold-down table or writing surface.

If you want to add seating, you can put on it a fold-down bench, with support legs turning out like the support for a table leaf.

Lots of ideas for making more space. A friend of mine used the side supports as extra storage.
