W. C. Fields is supposed to have said, A thing worth having is a thing worth cheating for.
Which brings us to Sam Gunn. Sam is a character Ive known since 1983, when I first wrote a short story about him. He was an astronaut on the moon then, and he saved the lives (or at least the sanity) of his stranded crewmates by brewing booze out of rocket fuel while they were waiting for weeks to be rescued.
Sam is a space entrepreneur, a pioneer in developing profit-making businesses in space. He is a fast-talking, hyperactive, womanizing little guy whos always in conflict with the self-important bureaucracies of big government and multinational corporations. Sam isnt above bending the law to the snapping point, and hell chase any reasonably good-looking woman he sees. Hes made dozens of fortunes in various space enterprises, and lost them just as quickly either dashing off after some new opportunity or giving away his money to a friend.
Sam has a heart as big as the starry universe, and hes left broken hearts all across the solar system.

"Privateers" is not a bad novel as far as this brand of scifi goes.
I need to get Privateers, never read it.
I have several Bova books, including the Orion series. Light reading, no thinking needed.
Also enjoyed his stint as the editor of Analog.
