My excitement dissipated, however, when I learned the iMacs were built around the the turn of the century. 350mhz processors, 128MB or RAM, no firewire or USB 2. OS 9.2 yuck. These computers couldn't even load cnn.com without flipping out.
So I started thinking. How can I make these computers functional again?

Why not OS X ?
Because for OSX you should have at least 256MB RAM if not 512MB, plus a decent speed CPU? My 450Mhz G4 with 1GB of RAM is right on the outer limit of acceptable performance.
You can put a gig of memory in a Blue Bondi
What problems would you expect with a Mac under 450 mhz?
I have a 400 mHz G3 iMac, with 640 mB sdram, and OS 10.3.9, recently installed.

It does not have the power to decode DivX movies at any size other than a small window, for instance (maybe this is due to the video card).
steep system requirements.
Xubuntu is a free upgrade. a memory upgrade is not. Especially in the context as originally posted.... a classroom.
I don't buy into the media's BS that the school is falling appart under the evil bush regime, but if they can continue to use existing computers with free software, that's good use of our tax dollars. Might prevent a future tax increase, who knows.
Even with as cheap as ram is, not all of us can afford that. I happen to be one of them. Ram isn't in the budget.
If the KDE devs are correct on their projections for KDE 4, you could put that too on it. It'll be both faster(20-30%) and smaller.(10-15%)
There's no reason why both MS and Apple have to bloat their OS's as much as they do.
At least Apple successfully makes it feel faster with their new revisions, but it still keeps getting bigger. MS is just crap.
