WATERBURY -- A city man pleaded guilty Monday to attacking his former wife with a machete.
Prabhudial Narine, 51, decided to plead guilty with the hope that words from his former wife and daughter at Narine's upcoming sentencing hearing will encourage a judge to show him some leniency, according to defense attorney Leonard Crone.
Jury selection in his case had finished in Waterbury Superior Court, but Crone said his client worried he would receive a stiffer sentence if convicted at trial.
There is no plea agreement in the case.
Narine faces a mandatory minimum prison sentence of five years and maximum of 25 years in prison.
Narine's sentencing hearing will take place in the spring.
He was arrested in August 2005 after he took a machete used for gardening and struck his wife, Bibi Narine, several times. Bibi Narine suffered injuries to her face, head, right arm and left leg.
The couple had been going through a divorce at the time, a process that has since been completed, according to Assistant State's Attorney Robin Lipsky.
The couple's 14-year-old daughter was also injured in the attack. She suffered injuries to her left wrist when she tried to stop the attack.
Narine pleaded guilty to first-degree assault, which stems to the attack against his former wife, and second-degree assault, which relates to the injuries his daughter suffered.
A machete? Am I missing out on some important aspect of gardening by not having a machete?
Do you folks in Connecticut use machetes for gardening?
Oh for heaven's Sikh...
LOL!!!
A machete is actually a very useful gardening tool.......I will definitely remember this case the next time my husband sharpens ours :)
Not in this household... ;-)
Connecticut ping!
Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
you mean you've never removed tomatoes from the plants with one?
Oh for heaven's Sikh...
More likely had his name been Prabhudayal Singh. A *Prabhudayal Gupta,* *Prabhudayal Gurung*, or *Prabhudayal Narine* would more likely be Nepalese rather than Sikh, though both the Sikh and the Nepalese have a notable tradition of the use of edged weapons.
You reckon the kudzu has made its way that far north yet?
"Narine pleaded guilty to first-degree assault, which stems to the attack against his former wife, and second-degree assault, which relates to the injuries his daughter suffered."
Something wrong with this picture? Attempted murder reduced to a couple assault charges? Is this as bad as it appears?
I live in central Illinois and I have it creeping up the side of my house.
