Easley: Nifong broke his word
The Raleigh News and Observer ^ | 2/3/2007 | Locomotive Breath

Posted on 02/03/2007 4:16:51 AM PST by Locomotive Breath

Gov. Mike Easley said last month that picking Mike Nifong to be Durham's district attorney was the worst appointment of his career, and he said Nifong broke his promise not to run for the office. Easley told law students in New York that Nifong's decision to seek office in last fall's election almost prompted him to consider yanking Nifong from office.

"I almost un-appointed him when he decided to run," Easley said. "I rate that as probably the poorest appointment that I've," the governor trailed off before adding "I've made some good ones."

Looks like LS will have at least one poster at that hearing. Can't rely on the MSM. Ruth Sheehan is probably still trying to determine how it's relevant. There are 2 million reasons.

We may have to believe Easley after what Professor Johnson has reported today at this site:

http://durhamwonderland.blogspot.com/search/label/Nifong

The key part is:

"The Easley press release announcing Nifong's appointment in 2005 was entitled, "GOV. EASLEY APPOINTS NIFONG AS INTERIM D.A," and opened with the following sentence: "Gov. Mike Easley today appointed Michael B. Nifong as Interim District Attorney for the 14th Prosecutorial District (Durham County)."

http://www.governor.state.nc.us/News_FullStory.asp?id=1993

Compare that approach to Easley press releases following the appointment of D.A. Scott Thomas (Craven County)

http://www.governor.state.nc.us/News_FullStory.asp?id=2754

"and Doug Henderson (Guilford County)."

http://www.governor.state.nc.us/News_FullStory.asp?id=2754

No mention of "interim" in either the title or the body of the press release."

It becomes an accidental one-lane road at night because people eager to watch scantily clad women dance on poles at the Pure Gold club park along both sides of the downtown Cary side street.

Neighbors say weekend nights are the worst. People line both sides of Hillsboro Street with cars and litter neighborhood yards with "bottles and cans and other various and sundry items I don't like to mention in public,"

Shameful. So Governor Mike Easley, Democrat, North Carolina got money from these exploiters?

EXCERPT

Police, city officials shut down strip club
Owner cited for not having license; business has been closed down before
Herald-Sun, The (Durham, NC)
April 25, 2004
Author: VIRGINIA BRIDGES

City and police officials shut down a North-East Central Durham strip club early Saturday morning.

Victor Olatoye, owner of Club Royale, was issued a civil citation for operating a strip club without an adult entertainment license, officials said.

About 12:30 a.m., police, city and fire inspectors entered 2202 Angier Ave., told the strippers to get dressed and told everyone they had to leave because the place was being shut down.

A bar wasn't set up, but people carried packs of beer with them as they left. Fire marshals inspected the wiring, and police confiscated beer from people who were drinking in the parking lot in front of the club.

Police were assisting fire inspectors and Pratt Simmons, the City-County Planning Department planning supervisor, who oversees zoning enforcement, said police Capt. Jim Bjurstrom.

"We told [the owner] as long as he continues to operate, we'll continue to shut him down," Bjurstrom said.

Olatoye didn't return a message left with a club employee Saturday.

On Saturday morning no cars were in the parking lot, and the padlock left by the city officials remained on the door. A flier from a local church, outlining four steps to being saved, was tucked in the padlock.

The club, which was open Monday through Sunday, 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., reopened about two weeks ago, said owners of businesses near the club.

The strip club, one of three on Angier Avenue, had been shut down in November under similar circumstances and had received at least three $300 citations in the past few years, Bjurstrom said (CORRECTION NOTE: The club was issued notice of violations but not fined).

At least four people reported armed robberies at 2202 Angier Ave. in 2002 and 2001, and in 2000 the manager of the then-Cabaret Royale killed a 20-year-old man in what the district attorney determined was self-defense because the man was trying to rob the place. In 1999 a man was shot in the leg after leaving the club. In 1992, two teen-agers beat a 35-year-old woman to death behind the club.

The club "was the worst thing that could happen to East Durham," said a business owner who asked not to be identified, saying he feared retribution.

Although the club is open at night, the surrounding car repair shops deal with smashed bottles, discarded cigarette packages and the smell of urine, which increases as the temperature rises, business owners said.

Catherine Gregory, who has lived near the club for 19 years, said she could hear the "bump, bump bump" of the music that filtered into the surrounding neighborhood.

There's an easy way to shut down strip clubs if the local news people wanted to do it.

All they have to do is photograph all the cars parked there, day and night, including the license plates, and run them in the paper for a couple weeks. I doubt that the clubs could subsist for long on the business it gets from young, single men.

The poster OnlyFactsMatter is going.

In all probability, Jakki is Clyde Lee Yancey, Jr.

Clyde Lee Yancey had an auto accident 1 year ago. Passenger in Clyde's car was Calvin Archer ***see below

Jackie Yancey (same date of birth)

Best guess - Jakki was arrested as Jackie Yancey, meaning he was a she and had a fake ID.

At any rate, we will know for sure today. That is IF Jakki shows.

Per the N & O, Easley appointed Nifong on an interim basis following recommendations from Hardin and Stephens. It seems the "courthouse crowd" has issues with Freda Black. Not the "status quo?"

I think it could be a problem for him. There had to have been someone more qualified for that job. Poor judgment on his part. And his silence during this was screaming. So it could come back & bite him. Some people in NC are still unhappy with the way the lottery came into the state. I don't think it will be smooth sailing for him in 2008.

None of this comes as surprising to me; but I am dismayed to see it in print. Why? As I've gotten to know the 18+ year olds in the Raleigh piedmont area over the past 2 years, I've heard some astonishing stuff. Which includes "swinging partners" (marriage swappping) among the blue-blood Dem elite of Raleigh. The 'kids' are shocked, and, well, one expects this out of San Francisco, but, the longer I live here, the more I learn...

District attorney hires new assistant

By John Stevenson : The Herald-Sun
jstevenson@heraldsun.com
Feb 5, 2007 : 12:00 am ET

DURHAM -- Another assistant attorney general soon will be roaming the Durham courthouse, but it has nothing to do with the controversial Duke lacrosse sex-offense case.

Three weeks after succumbing to criticism and handing off the lacrosse matter to special state prosecutors, District Attorney Mike Nifong is summoning Assistant Attorney General Brian Wilks to Durham on a happier note.

Probably beginning Feb. 12, although the date is subject to change, Wilks will begin working for Nifong as supervisor of District Court operations.

NCCU LAW SCHOOL
Smooth talking
Herald-Sun, The (Durham, NC)

A team of N.C. Central University law students that won a regional mock trial competition last weekend got some good pointers from Brian Wilks and Dawn Baxton, bboth assistant public defenders in Durham. Still, the students, who now go into national competition next month in Dallas, faced a make-or-break contest that could only be won with plenty of self-motivated preparation.

The students went into the regional competition, which was at NCCU, knowing they would be evaluated on numerous points, not the least being professionalism. As Superior Court Judge Ron Stephens said, "The overall quality was excellent."

New lawyers join prosecution, public defender's office in Durham
Herald-Sun, The (Durham, NC)
January 4, 1997
Author: JOHN STEVENSON The Herald-Sun
Estimated printed pages: 2

Reflecting the continuing explosion in Durham County's judicial workload, both the district attorney's office and the public defender's office started the new year with an additional lawyer.

(snip)

The new staff members, sworn in Thursday morning, are Assistant District Attorney Michael DeFranco and Assistant Public Defender Brian Clifford Wilks.

(snip)

Wilks got a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of South Carolina in 1993 and a law degree from N.C. Central University last year.

(snip)

District Attorney Jim Hardin Jr. said the help was needed in a Durham court system that handles about 50,000 cases a year. In the Superior Court criminal division alone, the number of pending cases as of Thursday was about 1,470 -- up 300 from the same time a year ago.

These threats are probably quite serious if the parents of the 20 Jan. incident were notified.

I have a feeling that when this is all over the support for the Palestinian cause at Guilford College will not be what it used to be.

Thanks for the ping. Guess we'd better stay tuned ...
