What makes me sad is all the Mac heads are so full of hate, they have spent countless hours posting Anti Vista posts, filled with disinformation, and their own talking points. Do you all get together with iChat and discuss what talking points are going to be used today?

"Five years for a chrome-plated turd"

That's a quote from the article.

What some businesses are starting to find out the hard way is that their web applications are not compatible with Internet Explorer 7. Now we have to rewrite code to accommodate IE and VISTA.

Been in the business 15 years. Tech types of all factions (Linux, Mac, Wintel) can fight the usual battles but at the end of the day people buying/replacing PCs will typically go with the bundled software. It's like buying a car...many of us will go to great lengths to modify, customize and/or remove items we don't like but the vast majority will exhibit the usual passive nature and take what they're given.

Microsoft knows that OEM/bundling is a key to their market position and will take the appropriate steps to protect it. It's not personal...it's just business. All the arguments about Vista are largely rehashes of the same arguments about XP. Its market share will grow too fast for some and too slow for others but it will be largely tied to new equipment sales.

Hardware bloat. Scrambled security features. Dysfunctional "authorization" scheme. Administrator User Rights that aren't the godlike system access they used to be. Buggy network protocols.

These are just some of the things I've tripped over in my hardware testing. Their lack of driver support has seriously hampered things as well as far as setting up software suites and test utilities for product testing.

I've been using it for a few months. Love it and it makes me happy.

We've already had to do that. Our IT department decided to just roll IE7 out without a test run first. Crashed part of our internal web architecture and our Serena/Teamtrack implementation.

We were not amused...

Let's look at it this way, ask yourself what good new features Vista brings to the table. Most will respond that it has Aero Glass, a really pretty UI.

Feh. It looks even more annoying than the Fischer-Price interface XP uses by default.

I can't see anything in that bloatware that I can't get from Windows XP. Case closed.

At least that "chrome-plated turd" is being well-shilled and well-spammed on FR.

Extremely
Tiresome

I don't hate Microsoft, Vista or Bill Gates. I reserve hate only for the most odious things in life: viruses, spyware, Saddam, Ahmadinejad, Hitler, Stalin, etc.

I purchased my first Microsoft product in 1978: their BASIC interpreter, which was largely written by Bill Gates himself. I disassembled some of his code, and it was fairly amazing to see how clever he was in fitting a lot of features into a small amount of memory.

When the IBM PC 5150 was introduced in 1981, we ordered one right away. Microsoft BASIC was still amazing, but it was starting to show signs of bloat and inefficiency compared to their earliest work. PC-DOS 1.0 was a not as good as CPM/86, but it had a better price.

I ordered my first Mac on the first day that Apple started taking orders for it in 1984, and it was a revolutionary system. The design and craftsmanship were first-rate. But most of my MSDOS-using colleagues condemned the graphical user interface concepts and swore that they would never use a system with a mouse, menus, windows, icons, etc. To them, the MSDOS command line was the only proper interface for a computer.

Since then, Microsoft has shamelessly copied the Mac interface into Windows. Microsoft partisans have changed their tune and embraced the concepts pioneered by the Mac - but they won't admit it. Some Windows users actually believe that Microsoft invented the mouse, and believe that Internet Explorer IS the Internet. There is a pathetic lack of innovation or critical thinking in the Windows community. The main area of innovation on Windows is the art of designing viruses, worms and spyware which have a destructive effect on society.

The Mac community doesn't hate Microsoft or Windows, but we do feel sad for Windows users. In my opinion, most PC users would have a much better computer experience if they dumped Windows and switched to Mac OS X. They would be more productive and have more fun using their systems without all of the crap associated with Windows and Microsoft.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have a somewhat urgent question that I don't want to post as a vanity, so, with sincere apologies, here goes:

How come I am getting so much Russian spam, and more importantly, how do I get rid of it permanently? (At least, I assume it is Russian because of the foreign letters used look Russian.)

Thanks again!

It sounds like the spam you're receiving is using the Cyrillic alphabet. There are a lot of ways to deal with spam, but most of them are dependent on your specific situation - your internet service provider, your operating system, your e-mail program, etc.

The easiest solution might be to switch to an email service that provides spam filtering. Google's gmail does that, and I believe Yahoo mail and Microsoft Hotmail do too.

Vista has a new Windows Mail program with features to handle junk mail.

Take a careful look at it. You may be getting an inrush of image-based spam - our servers have noticed a 300% increase over the last three months. It looks like text but it's actually graphics, which means that anti-spam programs and appliances can't parse it for keywords.

So far it's mostly "pump and dump" stock scams so not too many of my customers are complaining. It's more expensive to do as you might imagine. But the first time the "herbal Viagra" or the porn spams start coming in, look out. And the anti-spam vendors are only now getting a handle on it. Things will get better but for awhile they might get worse.

Back to the thread - I like Vista's looks but only have one workstation out of four that will really run it. XP and RedHat will have to do until I start to upgrade hardware. If it turns out I can't play my ripped MP3's on it I'll buy an IPod and Microsoft will have maneuvered itself out of that market. That's their problem, not mine.

Thanks so much for your help and suggestions! I will get on the phone to my internet service provider. Their spam filter doesn't seem to be effective against the Cyrillic ones, and I will get as many as six or seven Russian spam messages a day!

PS. At the office, we have to upgrade to new computers, which means at least some consideration to new operating systems as well. I am kind of leaning to a tablet computer, like an IBM Thinkpad. We've had Apple (in the old days, remember the Apple IIe?), HP, Dell, and Gateway, and our clear favorites have been the HP and Dell so far. I will have to research more on Vista to see if it is going to really bump us up from our XP. As you can see, I'm not terribly computer-literate; I learn the basics to get my stuff done and that's about it.

Thanks again!

If your ISP does offer spam filtering, and the spam you're receiving is always being sent from the same e-mail address, ask them to add that address to the "blacklist". Good luck!
