Helping kids understand about all kinds of family structures

That's a Family! is an entertaining documentary that breaks new ground in helping children in grades K-8 understand the different shapes families take today.

With courage and humor, the children in That's a Family! take viewers on a tour through their lives as they speak candidly about what it's like to grow up in a family with parents of different races or religions, divorced parents, a single parent, gay or lesbian parents, adoptive parents or grandparents as guardians. This award-winning film will stretch your mind and touch your heart no matter what your age.

That's a Family! comes with an extensive discussion and teaching guide, which includes lesson plans to use with the video, suggestions for facilitating classroom discussion at different grade levels, and additional resources for teachers, families and children.

Schools and community groups may also sign up for training on how to use That's a Family! as a diversity teaching tool with young children.

Recommended for students in grades 1 through 6.

The money....

Family Diversity Projects (FDP) is a non-profit organization 501(c)3, which depends on grants and individual donations to help fund our annual budget. This past funding cycle (2002-2004), FDP received generous grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council (a state agency), the Gill Foundation, the Icarus Foundation, and the AEC Family Foundation, as well as gifts from many individual donors.

"That's a Family!" was directed by Chasnoff and produced by Helen S. Cohen. It teaches about diversity in a straightforward way--by letting children talk about their families, which include grandparents raising their grandchildren, divorced parents, multiracial households, single mothers and fathers, adoptive families and gay couples. A child's-eye tour of various family structures, the video aims to give all young people a chance to feel visible--to let them talk about their families as a foundation for understanding differences of all kinds. As Emily Fong, a third grader, explains when describing her mixed race family, "You don't have to be a rat to marry a rat. You can be a rat and marry a mouse." Bit by bit, Cohen and Chasnoff hope to uproot prejudice before it has a chance to grow.

Hi Cal,

I heard that bill was signed by Corzine that lowered property taxes, regarding school funding.

Isn't that the same bill where the state legislature now does not require schools in NJ to teach the significance of Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Thanksgiving???? I know the bill was A-17 but cant find if that is the same bill he just signed.

It bloody well is not going to be shown in my classroom in Southern NJ.

Last year one of the people from the curriculum office asked me is I was comfortable in teaching about, get this masturbation.

I told them that if it became part of the curriculum they could find another teacher because I would NOT teach it.

She actually seemed relieved, telling me that the questions was presented to the board of education by someone in the community, (our local lefty activist)

School District Lets Parents View Controversial Diversity Video

Parents outraged by a diversity video that includes same-sex parents had the chance on Monday to view the tape for themselves.

(snip)

Tuesday's meeting starts at 7 p.m. According to the district's letter, administrators will hold a discussion session with parents following the screening.

School officials also said they are making arrangements to host possibly hundreds of parents at next month's, school board meeting. [Evesham Township School District]

Indoctrination continues in the name of Tolerance [which can be taught without a video] and Diversity [divides a nation].

Parents Spar Over Diversity Video
Wednesday, February 14, 2007 - Millennium Radio New Jersey
A video that's being billed as a way to teach diversity to kids is dividing the Evesham school district. At last night's school board meeting, officials heard from parents for and against the film "That's a Family!," which shows same-sex couples raising their children.

Several parents say it's important that third graders learn about all the different kinds of people that live in New Jersey. "The school board was bullied by intolerant people to remove this video," said Louise Ribelo of Evesham. Another woman who raises two children with her life-partner told officials that she wants to make sure her kids are safe when they go to school.

But numerous parents say the school board went too far by approving the use of the video. "Don't use teaching tolerance as an opportunity to squeeze in specific lifestyles and issues," said Evesham resident Drew Vicitti. Another parent says there is no necessity to engage third graders in sexuality.

Proponents and opponents of the video were both greeted with cheers as they made their cases. The school board has temporarily suspended the use of the video as a panel discusses whether the film is appropriate for young students.

"Some South Jersey Parents Upset About Award-Winning Diversity Video Being Shown In School,"

If this would have been a film from the conservative point of view the title would have read:
