The funny thing about that area, though, is that although the image is very negative, I saw some pretty nice middle class-style houses in the neigborhood when I visited it a few years back.

I think a lot of the crime may stick to the commercial/industrial areas and the housing projects. After all, remember that most of it is gang wars and the intended victims are other gang members, not civilians.

I relocated to Pittsburgh, PA to take a job and have been regretting the decision ever since. However, Los Angeles is truly out of control expensive nowadays. I plan to relocate to Florida in the next year or so. There is quite a bit of nice rental housing down there as I wait and see what happens to real estate prices.
