Good, time-hallowed [and ipso facto conservative] approach; in late Middle Ages on important occasions [say, a royal visit, or an execution of a notorious criminal] the schoolchildren of the place would be routinely and soundly whipped so that they would remember the occasion better. Why shouldn't it apply to the birthdays as well?
