New Thread Ping!
So say something crafty!
Thanks, Knitting.
I love that graphic!!!! Someday I'm going to screen it on a tote bag in which to carry my knitting, if you don't mind.
A Spinner's Meditation: Cloth of White
Cloth of White
The white wool sits there in my hand,
the wheel goes round and round and round,
As the thread is formed, a thin white strand,
And the wheel goes round and round.
Once it sat on back of ewe,
The wheel goes round and round and round,
And knew the sun, the feel of dew,
And the wheel goes round and round.
Once it knew the shearer's hand,
The wheel goes round and round and round
all gathered up in a dirty white band,
And the wheel goes round and round.
Once it met the water clear,
and the wheel goes round and round and round,
That made its grime all disappear,
And the wheel goes round and round.
Once it met the woolen card,
And the wheel goes round and round and round
To make it smooth and not so hard,
And the wheel goes round and round.
And soon it will be cloth of wool,
and the wheel goes round and round and round,
To keep me from the winter's cool,
and the wheel goes round and round.
The hand of God works like that too,
and the wheel goes round and round and round
Takes me through each step I rue,
and the wheel goes round and round,
Finds me wild then cuts the dross,
and the wheel goes round and round and round,
The tool he uses is his own cross,
And the wheel goes round and round.
Baptismal waters to wash my soul
and the wheel goes round and round and round,
And his own love to make me whole,
And the wheel goes round and round,
His cleansing comb sweeps through my life,
and the wheel goes round and round and round,
to straighten out the noise and strife,
and the wheel goes round and round and round.
Spun into thread for God's tapestry
and the wheel goes round and round and round,
I'm part of that bright cloth, you see,
and the wheel goes round and round.
Each life is precious in his hand,
And the wheel goes round and round and round,
Each life has place, a shining strand
And the wheel goes round and round.
The cloth he makes a shining white,
And the wheel goes round and round and round,
To clothe his Bride in linen bright,
And the wheel goes round and round.
And when the last strand's woven in
And the wheel goes round and round and round,
The wedding feast will then begin.
And the wheel goes round and round.
Be my guest! I keep meaning to do the same thing.
I have a question for all of you quilters and applique folks...
I am making a series of art quilts, banners really. Many of the applied pieces will be quite large, representing clothing legs, animals, etc.
How important is it to keep the grain line vertical so that they hang well? Or will bias pieces (to use the fabric patterns to best advantages) sit properly it they're boxed in by vertical backgrounds?
Any advice or suggestions would by much appreciated. I'm still drawing out cartoons, and probably won't put scissors to fabric until mid-week, so I have to time to talk and think about this issue. :-)
Thanks!
When you're finished I hear the cardio from vacuuming and laundry are equally as rewarding. Meantime can you get me beer and some nachos when the Bears game comes on?
Sincerely, Walter E. Williams. ;o)

This shows the images I'm using for inspiration. I've scanned and isolated each of the board spaces, and then am using an overhead projector to enlarge them to about 24" X 36" each.
I love the coloring and graphic design. I bought this game for my kids back in the late '80's. :-)
It will strengthen our legs if we need to climb a flight of stairs.... Bonus exercise points if you're watching the game up- or down-stairs! ;-)
Mrs. Williams is a saint! LOL
I have a majacraft, not a schaft, but my wheel looks a lot like that! ;0)
Check your FReepmail...
I have an Ashford Elizabeth with those same lines. :-)
Modern Princesses, with our computers and spinning wheels. ;-) Living with our Knights in Shining Armor! Does life get any better?

Neat short history of quilting post wwII...

Neat set of pictures of women spinning with distaff and drop spindle from ancient times:

I'm a pathetic name dropper... I'm waiting on an email reply right now from the owner of that page. ;-)
LOL I'm also stealing all of her images. I need a tote bag to hold my spindles, too! :-)
Have you ever done linen spinning like she suggests? It's very different from wool spinning. I've got a strick of flax to play with, but haven't gotten a distaff made/purchased yet.
Hello, my name is Pinz, and I have Fiber ADD. :-/
What a gold mine of techniques, information and design ideas! I better not look too closely until I finish my banners...
I've knitted my brow before.
I have spun a little hemp. I discovered the hemp I had will make an okay thread, but I need a distaff. I also think my hemp isn't uniform enough. I am planning on getting some better quality. And you are right, it is different.
I know to spin linen well, you need to keep it wetted if you want the threads to be smooth. I have never seen an illustration of medieval women spinning where they had a water source...wondering if they spun it with spit....
(That's what I did with my hemp fiber!)
Fiber ADD - is that what you call it?
