PARKERSBURG, W.Va. - Former POW Jessica Lynch became a mother on Friday, giving birth to a girl whom she named in honor of a fallen comrade.

Dakota Ann Robinson was delivered by Caesarean section at a local hospital at 5:10 p.m. The infant weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces, said Lynch's publicist, Aly Goodwin Gregg.

"She's fabulous and fat," Gregg said. "She's beautiful."

Lynch and her boyfriend, Wes Robinson, named Dakota in honor of Lynch's friend, Army Spc. Lori Piestewa of Tuba City, Ariz., who was the first woman to be killed in combat in Iraq. Piestewa's middle name was Ann, and Dakota which means friendship or ally, Gregg said.

Lynch and Piestewa served together in the 507th Maintenance Company from Fort Bliss, Texas. They were roommates there and tentmates in Iraq. Piestewa died and Lynch was captured when their unit was ambushed on March 23, 2003, near Nasiriyah.

Lynch suffered two spinal fractures, nerve damage and a shattered right arm, right foot and left leg when her Humvee crashed during the firefight.

The story of her capture and dramatic nighttime rescue made her an instant celebrity. The 23-year-old Palestine native is now a sophomore at West Virginia University-Parkersburg. Gregg said she probably will take a semester off or take online courses.

While Lynch still has health problems, Gregg said she came through the C-section "like a champ."

"Jessie's doing great, the baby did great," she said. "She's easy to love, absolutely beautiful."

She needs a husband.

Donna, if I told you what I think you need, I'd be banned.

Wow...talk about stretching it. The "Islamification of American women"? Get a grip!

I'm not contemptuous of you for believing in marriage, I'm contemptuous of your trying to take away our God given right to "freedom of choice". Whether we go to heaven or hell is based on what choice we make for our own life, nobody has a right to force us into marriage. To cast judgement on a person for having not married is more islamofacist (read control freak).

I'm the most mean spirited person you'll ever meet.

OK.

At this point, I'm just handing your case over to God for every blessing of peace and salvation. May He comfort you and ease your fears.

Good grief.

Her arms and hands look perfectly fine.

She's a pretty girl.

Why pick her to pieces?

I wish her only peace, happiness and a life of joy with her new, precious baby girl.

Oh, and good backpeddling here. You can't use bible quotes to prove this point, as there are none you can use that says marriage is about a piece of paper and a formal ceremony. /snicker

Oh dear, which shall I believe.

From my point of view, I see that you are stricken and silent because my argument makes perfect sense.

Get a life donna. You are trying to "force" your views on everyone here and you are casting judgement on people who you have no business casting judgement on. You are a busybody and really should consider cleaning out your own closet before sticking your nose in other's.

Ever heard the passage "For all and sinned and fallen short of the glory of God"? How about the one "let he who is without sin cast the first stone"?

I'm sure everyone else has already said "it's too bad they didn't get married first" so I'll say something different. Like, what are they going to tell this child when she gets old enough to understand that mommy and daddy didn't love each other enough to get married so that she wouldn't be born as a bastard child? That's what the Bible calls children who are born out of wedlock.

So who is to say that they aren't already married in the eyes of God? Wow...consider the concept!

Because people are willing to let this couple work out their relationship with all the complexities of complete strangers like yourself willing to brand them with a red "A" because of her extraordinary circumstances stemming from her willingness to defend your blue nose, does not mean they do not value marriage and wish the best for this couple and their child.

I didn't realize you were a spokesperson for all the people! Here's a novel idea! Why not work out the relationship before they have children? You forget she wanted complete strangers know she gave birth out of wedlock. A person's military service does not lessen the immorality of an act they create after they leave the service. By your line of reasoning someone who served in the military can do no wrong simply because of their military service. Many people who served also had "complex" lives but have also married before they had children yet you choose to spin her situation as normal.

It just means they understand the trauma she has gone through on our behalf and is continuing to go through as she tries to put her life back in order. People who never take any risks never make any mistakes.

By "they" I assume you are talking about others who have been in combat. My father understands her trauma as he landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He would strongly disagree being in combat justifies having children before getting married. Insinuating her "trauma" caused her to give birth before she married only show the futility of your argument. Choosing to take risks is fine so long as it doesn't risk the lives of others who have no say in the decision. Her baby had no choice. She chose not to marry and that is no mistake.

Again, I'm having a political discussion, not a religious one.

When/if they breakup, you can bet they will expect the courts we all pay for with our taxes to divide their assets and setup the visiting schedule for their poor unacknowledged child.

Just as a constructive criticism... screaming at the top of your lungs doesn't make you more convincing, it makes you look completely unhinged.

Just as constructive criticism... Don't exaggerate. One word in bold font is hardly screaming. It is done to reiterate and emphasize what should be an obvious point.

It's the camera angle, look at the building behind her. The bottom of the building is bigger than the top. It's called foreshortening when an artist does it.
