A Georgia man who was caught red-handed as he sailed a drug-laden charter boat into a private marina in Point Clear last year will spend almost 5½ months in prison, a federal judge in Mobile ruled this afternoon.
Gary Stephen Krist, 61, pleaded guilty in May to conspiracy to import cocaine and bringing illegal aliens into the country. Chief U.S. District Judge Ginny Granade gave him a lighter sentence at the request of prosecutors, who said the defendant has provided substantial assistance to law enforcement investigators on the case.
Krists stepson, who was waiting on the dock to unload the drug shipment on March 6, is scheduled to be sentenced later this month.
Authorities said the 38.6 pounds of cocaine had a retail street value of around $1 million. In court this afternoon, Krist apologized for his actions. This will be his second stint in prison; the first was a 10-year stay after kidnapping a college student and burying her alive. She survived the ordeal, and Krist won parole in 1979 and later got a full pardon.
Gary has made mistakes in his life. Hes made huge mistakes, defense attorney Jan Jones told Granade. I believe he is hugely and tremendously remorseful and deeply saddened by the stupidity of his actions.
This guy has connections.
I understand the US President pardoned some drug smugglers just before Christmas this year...
I wonder if he was a suppler to Bill Clinton or Clinton's brother?
The latest conviction he pardoned was from 1993, and they all served their time. None were drug smugglers, most of the drug charges were conspiracy charges.

5 1/2 MONTHS?
This is one of the most poorly written articles I've seen.
What illegals? Name of stepson? Name of the Judge? Oh and BTW...buried a college girl alive?
Brendan, this is a red meat story, and you took it and made a tofu canape. Marry money if you can.
