The surrogate mother / buy-a-baby thing is a tough one. Recognizing the desperation of infertile couples on one hand and the obvious moral/ethical/legal considerations on the other. Adoption wasn't an option it seems?
$50K is quite a chunk of change and I'd be concerned about the surrogate's future involvement and claim on the child.

I'm old-fashion too, MM. I can understand the couple's joy at having a child at last...even their appreciation for the surrogate, but having her be a guest at the baby shower strikes me as a bit too much.
What role the surrogate will play in the future is (or should be) of great concern. Was she just the incubator or did she contribute half of the child's genes? If the latter, there is the possibility she might change her mind and go to court.
