Oh, no, Molly. That's just horrible about volunteers who are giving so much of themselves at the sacrifice of their own families. I just pray it's not some of the guests who have perpetrated this on those volunteers. And YOU be careful.

Prairie, our priest's sermon is ALWAYS something from the Gospels. There is only one time I've heard him interject anything about today's world and that was to make an analogy. This self directed, wishy washy goo is just ruining the churches, and they wonder why attendance is down.

What a neat quick short history of our country. I didn't know the women in that era were so "free". Goodness, I always thought the ladies in the 19teens, 20s and 30s were very straight laced and prissy. I know in our village we (children) weren't allowed to do anything they thought was "out of line", like using a risque word or being "fresh".

No church is perfect...that I understand...

..but a church should be Christ centered and the Bible should be taught as inerrant....as Divine revelation from God.

In adult Sunday school we are in 1st Peter....
...Paul has been executed and Peter is warning/exhorting/encouraging the Christians to hold fast, even though persecution is coming, has come.

It's an interactive class with good response.

Our sermon today was Letting God be God...

..and pastor preached from 1st Chronicles 29:10-13...

...Everything has a purpose....everything is in God's sovereignty....Everything in life that happens to you is filtered by a God who has a divine plan......

..and gave as examples Job--(The Lord gave me everything I had, and they were His to take away.
Blessed be the name of the Lord

.. & Joseph.._in talking to his brothers who plotted against him..You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good, to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives

My husband takes the sermon notes & taped sermon home and makes CD's for the church as an outreach ministry.

It's reassuring to listen to these sermons over and again.

Kay, ((HUGS)) Sweetie!!!!!

And Molly dearie, building on what illstillbe said...

..Nations will come and go, politics will ebb and flow..

..as in Ecclesiastes.."there is nothing new under the sun",

.. God is sovereign of all!!

It would be immensely uplifting, illstillbe, if you were to put your beautifully poetic Lasting Things in book form for a wider audience to ponder and absorb.

Such reminders would counteract the "wishy washy goo", not just in sermons, but in society at large.

You know what I got to thinking about the other day? How much scents evoke memories. For example, the smell of Sweetheart soap always reminds me of my grandmother, because when I stayed all night at her house I had to take a bath and she always had Sweetheart soap.

Then I got to thinking about how there is a certain smell to the seasons. For me, Spring is fresh-cut grass (which I always smelled through the open classroom window in May), summer is the smell of hot dust (like that which I walked through barefoot in the lanes, or that covered the fairgrounds), fall is (of course) burning leaves, and also the smell of hot dogs and popcorn (at high school football games) and winter is the smell of fresh-cut evergreens.

Isn't it funny about stuff like that? To this day, the smell of Coppertone tanning lotion reminds me of our first seaside vacation in South Carolina.

You've just put your finger on a good essay topic! I read somewhere once that smells are the strongest triggers to memories.

When I taught a creative writing class, I always had a 10 minute writing period at the beginning of class for students to either free flow their thoughts on a subject of their choosing or take one of my suggestions written on the blackboard.

(I had to come up w/new topics every day, a task I performed while washing dishes, driving home from school, or just before going to sleep at night. LOL).

After the 10 minutes was up, I'd ask if anyone wanted to share his/hers and read it aloud to the class. The class rule was that anyone commenting had to find something POSITIVE to point out in the written work....maybe the appropriateness of a particular word, or a sentence that was well-worded, etc.

Since the students knew that their efforts would not be rediculed, so many of them became insistent that they read theirs, I had to limit the response time too. LOL

I really enjoyed that class and have had former students tell me that they enjoyed it too....as well as learning to write well.

This self directed, wishy washy goo

A very accurate description.

We've had a pleasant experience toay. Some neighbors have relatives visiting here and wondered if one of them could play some music with us because he plays fiddle. We like these neighbors a lot and agreed....but one never knows what talent level somebody will have and we were prepared to struggle through trying to play with someone who didn't have good timing, good sound etc.

What a pleasure this older gentlement turned out to be, he was quite good, and picked up new melodies very quickly by ear. He hasn't played much fiddle with other people but accompanied his dad on guitar when he was a boy so had a very good sense of timing and rhythm.

All in all we had a very nice playing music with him.

We've been playing a lot lately and my callouses are getting thick indeed. A good thing...

I considered that for some reason this congregation might need to hear this "message". But considering how this same minister announced before the sermon that the church had met and exceeded it's pleged receipts and was in the black for 2006, there must not be too much division in the church.

I am always so interested in your music stories. I am one who is not musically gifted except in the field of "appreciation" and that I have a lot of!

We have been playing a lot lately. This Sunday we are to "perform" in a jam situation for the neighboring park before their ice cream social. Volunteer only, except for possibly free ice cream which I won't be wanting as I'm trying to shed some pounds. (rolling eyes)

In Feb. we are to play with some friends at a garden party for the Garden Club in the town because our friends sister is a member and lined them up as entertainment. They asked us and we'll need to play an hour set. The friends were out yesterday and we were getting a song list together. It ought to be interesting.
