He's probably still too young. Was only 34 when he broke Roger Maris' record.
Not exactly a shocker. The steroid issue will have to fade before McGuire makes it.
How'd Rice do on this go around? If he had been a juicer then he would have gotten at least 60 more home runs. If Lasik had been invented he could have managed a few more years to pad the stats.
If Ripken hadn't made it, it would be proof of an impending apocalypse to me. ;-)
I am very pleased for Gwynn as well. I have always been a fan of his and was lucky enough to see him play in one of his last seasons.
Congatulations to both of these fine athletes.
The only thing I can't figure out, why would 9 people NOT vote for Ripken, and 14 voters NOT select Gwynn?
Are there still voters out there who feel that nobody should be elected in their first year of eligibility?
Who will get into the HOF first? Pete Rose or Joe Jackson?
The facts are Mark McGwire is being puniched because of SUSPECTED activity and Guilt by Association.
The facts : Mark McGwire never failed a drug test, Mark McGwire never broke any MLB Policy (THERE WAS NONE).
Was MM using steroids - probably, are his records tainted - Probably. But last I heard you were INNOCENT until proven guilty -- and in that case PROBABLY does not cut it.
Unfortunately, until he is convicted or a positive test shows up, I have to also consider BARROIDS in that same vein...however I am willing to bet right now Barry gets in first ballot with ease.
Why don`t they have a seperate steroid hall of fame? Problem solved.
Does this mean the Dave Clark 5 didn't make it? Aargh!
Who were the 8 jerks?

(Sorry, I saw a pun in there. :-))

Come on without, come on within.
We di'n't see nothing like the migh-ty Gwynn.
(Sorry, Mr. Dylan.)

So let me get this straight -- Mark McGuire doesn't make the Hall because of steroid accusations. Yet Dale Murphy, the 2-time MVP who led the 1980's in total bases despite playing for the horrible Atlanta Braves, doesn't get in. Again. Yes, Murphy trailed off towards the end of his career, but for six years he was the second best hitter in the National League (behind Mike Schmidt). Plus, you won't find a better character in baseball.
Just my two cents of course, from a die-hard fan of the Murph.
