Van Halen, Grandmaster Flash, R.E.M., Ronettes and Patti Smith make Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
CLEVELAND Van Halen made a "jump" into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday along with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., the Ronettes and Patti Smith. A panel of 600 industry experts selected the five artists to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 12 in New York.
Van Halen was the 1980s hard rock quartet led by guitarist Eddie Van Halen, outrageous lead vocalist David Lee Roth, and later rocker Sammy Hagar, that put out hits such as "Jump" and "Dreams."
R.E.M. was the quintessential indie rock band until breaking through to mass success in the early 1990s with songs like "Losing My Religion."
Grandmaster Flash led the most innovative act in early hip-hop, and the song "The Message" was like a letter from urban America.
Punk rock poet Patti Smith and Phil Spector favorites the Ronettes round out the 2007 class.
To be eligible, artists must have issued a first single or album at least 25 years before nomination.
Oh, I hated him. They were never the same. I'm not a heavy metal guy at all (big, big R.E.M fan from the second album on, for reference), but Roth was so over the top, Eddie so good and their songs solid enough that I couldn't help but respect them. Hagar made them just like any other 80s mediocrity.
Best location in the nation ping.
Wonder who'll show up to play at the ceremony? One of the requirements is that the band reunite to play.
What about the dude from 'Extreme' that sang for them for about 5 minutes?
I read somewhere, that Eddie Van Halen replaced Michael Anthony (the bass player) with his son, and that it was not a 'friendly' agreement. I used to worship at Eddie's feet when I was a testosterone-laden teenager, but he and his brother must be a couple of (um) jerks to work with.
Still and all, I went to see one of their live shows, and Eddie's solo was the only time I've ever seen an entire crowd (15000? more?) go quiet. It was amazing.
I take it Gary Cherone won't be joining them.
The HOF is a joke as long as they keep Johnny Rivers out of it.
VH and Roth were great back in the day, but I don't think it's going to be quite the same now that they are all in their 50s. Roth's voice is a shell of what it once was.
The Bone Daddies still not selected. Pity.
I liked them even more back when they didn't exist. (Just an opinion......)
Freddy!
Heino!
Way Over-rated
He fronted Extreme...another great guitar band. Never got popular though...all the songs that got any airplay were the touchy-feely makeout tunes, if I remember right.
Nuno Bettencourt was a guitar master.
'Bout time an actual ROCK act made it into the ROCK AND ROLL Hall of Fame.
As for REM, if you went to college in the South during the 80's, you no doubt share the same memories I do of listening to that music nonstop. I'm not sure if it translated outside of the South but these guys were the biggest thing in College music.
"And now is the time on Sprockets when we dance...."
Hagar is GREAT as a soloist.
DLR is GREAT with VH.
Hagar was mediocre with VH.
Roth was mediocre as a soloist.
I did like Extreme back in the day. They were one of those unfortunate bands that got tagged with the sappy ballad, even though they pretty much rocked on the rest of their stuff.
Buddy of mine went to see Roth and Hagar on their combined tour a couple of years ago. He said that Sammy hadn't lost a step (and actually, was better than with VH). Also said that Roth sucked. Not only did he sound terrible, but he forgot the words to one of the songs.
Broken glass everywhere
People pissing on the stairs, you know they just
Dont care
I cant take the smell, I cant take the noise
Got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice
Rats in the front room, roaches in the back
Junkies in the alley with a baseball bat
I tried to get away, but I couldnt get far
Cause the man with the tow-truck repossessed my car
Chorus:
Dont push me, cause Im close to the edge
Im trying not to loose my head
Its like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
Standing on the front stoop, hangin out the window
Watching all the cars go by, roaring as the breezes
Blow
Crazy lady, livin in a bag
Eating out of garbage piles, used to be a fag-hag
Search and test a tango, skips the life and then go
To search a prince to see the last of senses
Down at the peepshow, watching all the creeps
So she can tell the stories to the girls back home
She went to the city and got so so so ditty
She had to get a pimp, she couldnt make it on her
Own
Chorus:
Its like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from goin under
My brothers doing fast on my mothers t.v.
Says she watches to much, is just not healthy
All my children in the daytime, dallas at night
Cant even see the game or the sugar ray fight
Bill collectors they ring my phone
And scare my wife when Im not home
Got a bum education, double-digit inflation
Cant take the train to the job, theres a strike
At the station
Me on king kong standin on my back
Cant stop to turn around, broke my sacroiliac
Midrange, migraine, cancered membrane
Sometimes I think Im going insane, I swear I might
Hijack a plane!
Chorus:
My son said daddy I dont wanna go to school
Cause the teachers a jerk, he must think Im a
Fool
And all the kids smoke reefer, I think itd be
Cheaper
If I just got a job, learned to be a street sweeper
I dance to the beat, shuffle my feet
Wear a shirt and tie and run with the creeps
Cause its all about money, aint a damn thing
Funny
You got to have a con in this land of milk and
Honey
They push that girl in front of a train
Took her to a doctor, sowed the arm on again
Stabbed that man, right in his heart
Gave him a transplant before a brand new start
I cant walk through the park, cause its crazy
After the dark
Keep my hand on the gun, cause they got me on the
Run
I feel like an outlaw, broke my last fast jaw
Hear them say you want some more, livin on a
Seesaw
Chorus:
A child was born, with no state of mind
Blind to the ways of mankind
God is smiling on you but hes frowning too
Cause only God knows what you go through
You grow in the ghetto, living second rate
And your eyes will sing a song of deep hate
The places you play and where you stay
Looks like one great big alley way
Youll admire all the number book takers
Thugs, pimps, pushers and the big money makers
Driving big cars, spending twenties and tens
And you wanna grow up to be just like them
Smugglers, scrambles, burglars, gamblers
Pickpockets, peddlers and even pan-handlers
You say Im cool, Im no fool
But then you wind up dropping out of high school
Now youre unemployed, all null n void
Walking around like youre pretty boy floyd
Turned stickup kid, look what you done did
Got send up for a eight year bid
Now your man is took and youre a may tag
Spend the next two years as an undercover fag
Being used and abused, and served like hell
Till one day you was find hung dead in a cell
It was plain to see that your life was lost
You was cold and your body swung back and forth
But now your eyes sing the sad sad song
Of how you lived so fast and died so young
Chorus:
Where's Nena!?!?
Heino looks like he should be wearing a doctor's uniform in a concentration camp somewhere.
