Just a rotten case: As the prosecution of Duke's lacrosse players unravels,
The Plain Dealer ^ | 1/7/07

Then, just last month, the director of a DNA laboratory that tested samples taken from the woman testified that he and the prosecutor had agreed in May to withhold some of the findings. The exculpatory nature of the results - specifically, that the swabs included traces of semen from several men, none of them the Duke defendants - offer the strongest evidence yet that the prosecutor himself should be the subject of an investigation, and that he should have no further connection with this case.

I was not aware that Baker left his job "in protest."

Is that true?

As well as a couple of the DPD, president dick, the 88 & Duke itself. If the university takes any action it will only be because they were forced to do it.

I would like to read that "factsheet" that he compiled and passed out "to students who didn't know what was going on."

abb,soldierdad all:

I have been lurking FR for months most concerning this case. Soldierdad's question remineded me of how many gems the DBM spew out that if you are not on top of everything all the time you'll be (surprise, surprise) greatly mislead.

If you remember right after the first set of indictments, Baldo went the dorms to ambush interview players, also an email was leaked to the press reportedly form a player who said he was going the cops to tell all.

The email was quickly proven not have been sent by the player (I think it was Dave Evans) because he was in class and did not have access to a computer when it was sent.

Because of the other questionable actions of investigators that day, it was assumed that the police sent the email to pressure a player to flip.

That said, could perhaps the email not have been sent by the police, but one of these pot bangers?

What is missing in Mr. Hummel's apologia is an apology for failing to consider the consequences of his actions: Actions that have turned out to be far more personally damaging to those involved and Duke's reputation than the sophmoric but legal hiring of two exotic dancers by the LAX players. Was the latter in bad taste? Absolutely. Is what Mr. Hummel did more egregious? Yes, in that its consequences led to the enablement of a psychopath like Nifong. Mr. Hummel's action served to create the hysteria that allowed Nifong to wreak his havoc. Mr. Hummel seems oblivious to his contribution to the mess. So the basic question is: Mr Hummel, knowing what you know now, would you still do the same thing? I fear he will say yes and that is a very, very sad state of affairs.

*that* I don't know. He was there, and then he was gone. I didn't perceive at the time that he was being recommended to leave. My perception was that he was only throwing in his last ugly shots (at Duke) before he left for Vanderbilt.

Addendum: my link is no longer working at the post. Here's the clip of the response by Baker to a Duke parent, please see this:

snip:

***

How did Baker become the “leading dissident”? The paper doesn't actualy tell people at Vanderbilt.

In late March, lamenting the “college and university blind-eying of male athletes, veritably given license to rape, maraud, deploy hate speech, and feel proud of themselves in the bargain,” Baker issued a public letter denouncing the “abhorrent sexual assault, verbal racial violence, and drunken white male privilege loosed amongst us.” To act against “violent, white, male, athletic privilege,” he urged the “immediate dismissals” by Duke of “the team itself and its players.”

Has Baker adopted a more tolerant attitude between last March and the penning of the Vanderbilt publication? It appears not. A mother of an unindicted lacrosse player recently wrote him, “asking for your help.” She noted,

Over the past eight months, much of the evidence has revealed that the three falsely indicted young men have been the victims of rogue DA Nifong. They have been denied due process and are the victims of a possible conspiracy. Whatever you believed in March, I am sure you must be questioning the actions of DA Nifong. Therefore, I respectfully request that you join Pres. Brodhead in asking for a special prosecutor. In addition, I respectfully request you petition Pres. Brodhead to allow Collin and Reade to resume classes this spring.

Our paths may have been different, but I am sure all of us seek the truth and justice. This can only be accomplished with an impartial prosecutor. Collin and Reade, along with Dave, have had to put their lives on hold due to a false accusation. I trust that with the filing of ethics charges by the NC State Bar and the Conference of District Attorneys calling for DA Nifong to recuse himself, we can all agree that justice can best be served with Nifong’s removal.

Here is the full text of Baker’s reply:

LIES! You are just a provacateur on a happy New Years Eve trying to get credit for a scummy bunch of white males! You know you are in search of sympaathy [sic] for young white guys who beat up a gay man [sic] in Georgetown, get drunk in Durham, and lived like “a bunch of farm animals” near campus.

I really hope whoever sent this stupid farce of an email rots in .... umhappy [sic] new year to you ... and forgive me if your really are, quite sadly, mother of a “farm animal.”

This was one of the earlier notices of Baker's move.

I know we all talked about it back then, but I saw or heard nothing about him quitting "in protest."

Thank you; I thought that was something else I had missed.

It seems to me if had left "in disgust," we would have heard about that big time. That would be too good a story for the press not to have latched on to.

Was I declaring them guilty of rape? No.

He could have fooled me.

That sounds like a lot of psychobabble to justify his part in rushing this to judgment.

And this certainly proves, in his own words, that it is a class thing -- AND a town/gown thing.

http://dukenews.duke.edu/mmedia/features/lacrosse_incident/lange_baker.html

Here is a link to Baker's original letter to the Duke Administration. I have to say the Provost, he who appears on the pot banging videos, responded in an appropriate way - though I imagine his thoughts then and even more so now were a bit less diplomatic.

What is interesting is the gratuitous slight on Coach K. Methinks Prof Baker feels neglected and underpaid.

Was I out their proclaiming the Lacrosse players guilty? Well, yes. I did and do think they are guilty of perpetuating the objectification of women.

Can one get arrested for that? Someone should notify Playboy

I saw this email response from him at another website. Apparently it is legit.

What a scumbag.

I looked up the definition of "objectification," but it was so filled with psychobabble I couldn't understand it.

That's quite shocking, isn't it?

I got the impression that the email he was responding to was from a family member or close friend. FGS, how can you justify paying that old fool a cent.

No wonder the black movement is in such a sorry state.

The Rape Nazis on TV keep saying that "someone" has given Nifong something; quite simply, there is nothing to give.

Perhaps the alleged victim gave Nifong an STD...
