"Acceptable" is different from "known".
Surely I would've *heard of* this if it was ever really popular! Of course, my sister being older would be a better source.
Heck, I know things/styles people now claim were big in the '80s but I never ever heard/saw them, or hardly ever saw them to say they counted or were "big" (i.e., representative of the culture at large)!
This also brings to mind something my mother claims lately. That in the '50s "square" was a GOOD thing and "square guys" were nice straight-laced good boys. My only knowledge of it is as a deragatory term (same thing, I guess, but different bent - nerd, geek, dork).
Same kind of thing. I still doubt her that such meaning was prevalent!
Guess it's like my dad telling me that he never saw girls with poodle skirts or guys with denim, a tee-shirt, and a DA in the 1950s. He still insists its a Hollywood invention
